Celebrating Black History Month at Gannon University

Black History Month offers a renewed opportunity to honor, celebrate and uplift the Black voices in our community - past, present and future. All are invited to join in Gannon’s Black History Month education and programming, with upcoming events including: A Conversation and Exhibit of the Black/African American Alumni experience at Gannon University, Josh Gibson’s Negro Leagues Educational Tour, and a presentation from members of The Divine Nine.

At 5 p.m. on Feb. 15, all are invited to the CHESS Speaker Series event, A Conversation and Exhibit of the Black/African American Alumni Experience at Gannon University in the Waldron Campus Center, Room 219. The event includes a panel conversation with some of Gannon’s Black and African American alumni, led by Parris Baker, Ph.D., associate professor and director of Gannon’s social work, mortuary science and gerontology programs. Panelists will exhibit photos throughout the room from their experiences during their time at Gannon. Refreshments will be served.

On Feb. 20, the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Gannon Athletics are collaborating to welcome the Josh Gibson Negro Leagues Educational Tour. Students and faculty will be touched by a tradition of greatness as they hear first-hand narratives from a direct descendant of Josh Gibson through his great-grandson, Sean L. Gibson, and learn the history of the Negro League. The program will begin at 5 p.m. in the Yehl Ballroom.

In collaboration with the Jefferson Educational Society, Parris Baker, Ph.D., associate professor and director of Gannon’s social work, mortuary science and gerontology programs, will examine the meaning of “self-evident truths” based on political and cultural hermeneutics in 1776, 1963 and in our post-modern America during Dr. Martin Luther King and America’s Self-Evident Truth. This event will be held at 7 p.m. on Feb. 20 at the Jefferson Educational Society, located at 3207 State Street, Erie PA, 16508.
