During the summer of 2022, Gannon University Professor Matthew Gacura, deployed summer STEM classes for K-12 students at the Hamilton School at Sarah Reed, a school designed to support at-risk and underprivileged youth in the Erie area. Dr. Gacura and Dr. Vanderlaan of the Gannon biology department designed experiments for the participating students to explore a wide range of subject matters, including making pickles, extracting DNA from fruit, and observing and culturing microorganisms found on students' hands.

In the Fall, Gannon University donated three high-quality microscopes to this school, allowing students to gain experience in microbiology. Microscopes were cleaned and serviced before donation by Gannon biology department personnel.
