Davide Piovesan

Davide Piovesan is currently Associate Professor in the Mechanical Engineering department at Gannon University and director of the Biomedical Engineering Program. He received his M.S.M.E in 2003 and Ph.D. in Mechanical Measurement  for Engineering in 2007 at the University of Padova, Italy. His dissertation presented a set of experimental and analytical validation techniques for human upper limb models. From 2004 to 2008 he was a visiting scholar and post-doctoral fellow at the Ashton Graybiel Spatial Orientation Lab at Brandeis University. There, he worked on the mechanics of movement adaptation in non inertial environments as part of a NASA extramural funding program. He joined Northwestern University in 2008, working as a post-doc fellow at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago until 2013 in the field of rehabilitation robotics. Davide’s  main research interest is to gain insights on the role of biomechanics in the neural control of movements, with applications to rehabilitation engineering. He is also Interested in Assistive devices and Additive manufacturing. He is the founder of the Special Process and Additive Manufacturing (SPAM) laboratory at Gannon University.

“Measure of postural stability on commercial flooring”
Description: The design of safety flooring requires a trade-off between shock absorption and balance impairment. If the surface is too soft the balance of the person walking on it is precarious. Balance impairment is usually quantified by the wobbling of the person which is reflected in the rapid change of the center of pressure on the surface. We propose to study the variation in the center of pressure position induced by different surfaces during quiet standing.

Description: Desktop 3 D printers allow for the fabrication of samples that are used for prototyping and the testing of chemical and physical properties. Post-curing is the process of finishing the samples in a specialized chamber with heating and lighting elements that allows the samples to developed their strongest properties.  This research will design, and build an ad-hoc curing chamber.

Investigated how segmental reflexes and visual feedback contribute to the modulation of arm stiffness during multi-joint arm movements and force modulation tasks both in stroke survivors and healthy controls.

  • Investigated the kinematic features that characterize reaching and reversal movements in stroke survivors
  • Proved experimentally that endogenous control can induce arm rhythmic movements via limit cycle behaviors
  • Studied how therapist perceive hypertonia and their ability to discriminate between dystonia and spasticity in a multiple degrees of freedom arm
  • Analyzed the effect of visual delays in the modulation of arm dynamics
  • Established that absence of visual feedback decrease arm stiffness in stroke survivors
  • Measured the modulation of stiffness during robot mediated therapy in stroke survivors as a mean for evaluating spasticity

  • Measured the influence of arm inertial parameters when estimating joint torque during arm reaching, founding that error in arm segment parameters are more relevant than kinematic errors

Modeled the contribution of electromyographic activity and body segment parameters, to the adaptation of movement in non inertial fields.

 

  • Conducted optimization of EMG signals in a single-joint system with redundant muscles to reproduce measured trajectory by means of hierarchical muscle models
  • Measured body segment parameters of the arm using classical and image analysis techniques
  • Developed a time-frequency technique to estimate arm stiffness along reaching movements during single trials
  • Constructed mathematical modeling and numerical simulation of arm movements in non-inertial environments using redundant muscles to map the change of muscle length with respect to Cartesian and joints’ angular trajectories
