Margaret A. (O’Bryan) Doheny is professor emerita from Kent State University and has enjoyed a very distinguished career in both nursing and academia. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Villa Maria College in 1970, a Master’s degree in higher education from Cleveland State University in 1976, a Master of Science in nursing degree in 1980 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1989 from Kent State University.
Before retiring from her nursing faculty position in 2012, Dr. Doheny had over 40 years of nursing education experience, 35 of those years as a faculty member at Kent State College of Nursing. While at the College of Nursing she taught students in the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral nursing programs and was the concentration director for the Clinical Nurse Specialist program. She was actively involved in the development and teaching of the online Clinical Nurse Specialist and Nurse Educator programs.
One of the first nationally recognized nursing researchers to do research and study bone health in men, Dr. Doheny’sresearch has served as a foundation and contributed to a more widely recognized disparity issue of osteoporosis prevention screening and testing in men.
Dr. Doheny was inducted as a fellow into the American Academy of Nursing in 2013. She serves on the nursing advisory board of the National Osteoporosis Foundation, is a member of the editorial board of National Osteoporosis Foundation’s Osteoporosis Clinical Updates; in addition, she is one of the founding members of the Northeast Ohio Chapter of Clinical Nurse Specialists and is a member of the Ohio Nursing Association.
She is the recipient of the Pioneer of Osteoporosis Research Award by the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Outstanding Contribution to National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses (NAON) Award; NAON’s Past President’s Leadership Scholarship Award, and the Research and Scholarship Award from nursing honor society, Sigma Theta Tau International, Delta Xi Chapter. In 2015 Gannon University honored Dr. Doheny with a Distinguished Alumni Award from the Morosky College of Health Professions and Sciences.
Throughout her career, Dr. Doheny has authored over 50 publications and presented over 175 papers in nursing education and orthopaedic nursing care in countries around the world, including Singapore and Japan. Dr. Doheny has received 20 funded grants from organizations including: the National Institutes of Health; Sigma Theta Tau, Delta Xi Chapter; National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses; and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. The outcomes of her research are widely cited in professional journals and contribute to nursing’s body of knowledge on metabolic bone disease and osteoporosis prevention.
Dr. Doheny has been married for 40 years to her husband, Patrick Joseph (PJ) and they have a son, Kevin, who lives in Chicago.
