Dr. James Scozzie '65

James A. Scozzie earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry from Gannon University in 1965. Upon graduating, he attended Case Western University where he received his Ph.D. in 1970.

Following completion of his degrees, Dr. Scozzie began his professional career as a Research Chemist at Diamond Shamrock Corporation. He was employed in a variety of capacities, including research and research management, during his time with the company.

In 1983, he began work with the United States-Japanese joint venture, SDS Biotech, a company focused on agricultural and animal health products and the biotechnologies supporting them. Dr. Scozzie served as Director of Corporate Research at SDS Biotech until the U.S. branch of SDS was acquired by the Swedish company, Fermenta. This acquisition created the contract research organization, Ricerca LLC, where Dr. Scozzie was named President.

Dr. Scozzie has since retired from his role of President and Chief Operating Officer of Ricerca, and currently serves as Senior Vice President of BioEnterprise Corporation, a company founded by the Cleveland Clinic, Case Western University, and the University Hospitals Health System. BioEnterprise is focused on accelerating the growth and creation of early-stage bioscience companies and recruiting them to northeast Ohio.

Throughout the years, Dr. Scozzie has maintained very strong ties with his alma mater. He served as Vice-President of the Gannon University National Alumni Board for three years before being named as President in January 2007. He was instrumental in the creation of the Board’s first Strategic Plan, which was implemented in 2009.

In addition to his involvement with Gannon, Dr. Scozzie is an active volunteer in the greater Cleveland area. He is a member and past Board Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Ohio’s Edison Biotechnology Center, Omeris. He is a past member of the Visiting Committee of the College of Arts and Sciences at Case Western Reserve and Case Western Advisory Council. Furthermore, Dr. Scozzie previously served as the Board President of United Way of Lake County.

Dr. Scozzie and his wife, Dolores, reside in Concord, Ohio and are the proud parents of three children.
