    You Will Learn

    The chemical engineering program is a cooperative program with the University of Pittsburgh. In total, the program requires five years of study: three years at Gannon University followed by two years at the University of Pittsburgh. Upon completion, the student is awarded two degrees, a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Gannon University and a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from the cooperating university.

    During their time at Gannon, chemical engineering students take specified courses in chemistry, mathematics, engineering and the liberal studies core. Students experience our strong commitment to effective teaching and are involved in hands-on laboratory experience with modern instrumentation, all while gaining the advantage of beginning college-level work in small classes with a personalized atmosphere.

    You Will Experience

    Chemical engineering students have opportunities for internships and co-ops at a number of locations, including GE Transportation, LORD Corporation, and several privately- and publicly-owned industries. Additional internship opportunities are available through the University of Pittsburgh during the second phase of study. 

    You Will Achieve

    Multiple exciting career pathways exist for a chemical engineer, including work as a product engineer, refining engineer, process development engineer or research engineer. Graduates in this field are eligible to pursue job opportunities related to the following areas:

    Nearly all items manufactured on an industrial scale have in some way involved the work of a chemical engineer. Chemical engineers design equipment layout, find efficiencies that optimize production costs, and prioritize health, safety and environmental considerations as part of the manufacturing process.

    Example Course Descriptions

    Students take a combination of liberal studies courses, a leadership seminar, and courses in the chemical engineering program, which provide a comprehensive education that enables students to be at the top of their field. Some courses in the chemical engineering program are:

    CHEM 221 & CHEM 222: Organic Chemistry I & Organic Chemistry Laboratory I

    These courses are taken simultaneously. Students are introduced to the laboratory methods and techniques of organic chemistry while studying hydrocarbons, both aliphatic and aromatic compounds. In the classroom, emphasis is placed on the structures, properties, syntheses, reactions and uses of these compounds. In the lab, emphasis is placed upon the purification and characterization of organic molecules.

    MATH 304: Differential Equations 1

    This course discusses ordinary differential equations with applications to science and engineering. Topics discussed include solution methods for first-order equations, linear equations and systems of equations, including Laplace transforms. Other topics may include power series methods, numerical methods or nonlinear phenomena.

    ME 315:Materials Science

    An introductory study of engineering properties of materials where students learn the engineering science of atomic structure, crystals, crystal imperfections and diffusion. Additionally, students learn mechanical properties, dislocations and strengthening, failure mechanisms, phase diagrams and transformations and thermal processing and alloys.
