Scholarships
Gannon University Chemistry Contest
This
program awards three scholarships each year in the amounts of
$12,000, $8,000 and $4,000 (amounts listed are totals, which are
then divided over four years at Gannon). Entering freshman students
wishing to apply for the scholarships should sign up to take a
30-minute exam intended to assesses their background in
chemistry.
American Chemical Society
Scholarships
The American Chemical Society, the
largest membership organization devoted to the study and
advancement of a single science, sponsors the ACS Scholars Program, intended for qualified applicants
who want to enter the fields of chemistry, biochemistry chemical
engineering and enter careers in chemistry-related fields.
Awards
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry recognizes
outstanding performance in the field by identifying students for
awards.
- Erie Local Section of the American Chemical Society Outstanding First Year Chemistry Award presented annually in April to the student selected by the faculty for outstanding performance in first year chemistry
- Founders' Day Awards in Chemistry and Biochemistry presented annually in May to the graduating students with the highest cumulative grade point average in each major
- College Chemistry Award sponsored by the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh (SAPC)presented annually in May, this award for senior chemistry majors recognizes excellence in the study of chemistry
Grants
Students conducting research in the Department of Chemistry and
Biochemistry are eligible to apply for James J. Duratz Research
Grants under the guidance of their undergraduate research advisor.
Grant applications are usually due in October and March each
year.
Clubs and Organizations
Gannon's chemistry students have the opportunity to develop
leadership skills through involvement in student and professional
organizations related to the discipline.
- Gannon University Chemistry Club
The Gannon University Chemistry Club is an organization open to all chemistry majors as well as any students enrolled in chemistry classes. The club offers to its members a chance to participate in science-related community service both on- and off-campus.
- Gamma Sigma Epsilon National Honor Society
According to GSE, "The object of the society shall be to recognize outstanding academic achievement in chemistry, to increase interest, scholarship, and research in chemistry, and to promote professionalism and the general welfare of the chemist."
- American Chemical Society
The Mission of the ACS is to advance the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and its people.
- American Chemical Society- Erie Local Section
The Erie Local Section unites chemists in northwest Pennsylvania to promote the chemical sciences through education, networking and community engagement for the benefit of its members and the local community.
Learning Abroad
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has developed
curriculum matrices for students interested in pursuing a learning abroad experience at the American University of Rome. Learning abroad
opportunities may be possible at other partner universities.
Interested students should work with their academic advisors and
with the Learning Abroad Office (mchugh002@gannon.edu).
Student Employment Opportunities
Students have the opportunity to work in the Department as
laboratory preparatory assistants, laboratory teaching assistants,
stockroom personnel and office assistants. The Department hires
work-study assistants at the start of the fall and spring
semesters, and may have positions open over the summer months as
well. Interested students should request a scheduling form from the
Department Chairperson and apply for the program through the Gannon University Financial Aid Office.
