Stock Market Game Rules

Basic Rules

  • Game runs for ten weeks in the FALL and ten weeks in the SPRING.
  • Three to five players per team is recommend.
  • Each team begins the game with a hypothetical $100,000.
  • Only common stocks listed on the American Stock Exchange (AMEX), the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), and the Nasdaq stock market may be traded.
  • Players may buy, sell, short sell, or short cover.
  • A 2% brokers fee is charged for each transaction.
  • Stocks below $5.00 a share may not be bought.
  • Minimum number of shares per transaction in 100.
  • The number of shares traded is limited to the number of shares actually traded on the market that day.
  • Teams may borrow up to $100,000 to purchase stocks on the margin. Interest rates on money borrowed will be determined by the prime rate.
  • To generate a portfolio, teams must enter a valid order.
  • Portfolios are not liquidated at the end of the game. Portfolio equity in the tenth week is used for final rankings.
  • Portfolio equity is based on value of stocks. No dividends are paid.

      SMG Rules

      • Teachers must have e-mail address and internet access to play.
      • Transaction are made at SMG2000 site on the world wide web ( http://www.smg2000.org ).
      • Each team is assigned an ID# and a password to gain access to game pages.
      • Resources for accessing stock price quotes and correct ticker symbols are available at game site.
      • Transactions are made at closing price of day entered. Trades entered after close of market (4:00 P.M.) will be priced at next days closing price.
      • Portfolios are updated and available on a daily basis.
      • Stock and cash dividends are automatically computed into team portfolios.
      • Teachers will receive periodic mailings throughout the game from SMG of PA headquarters.
