GANNON
ANNOUNCES 2008
VOLLEYBALL RECRUITING CLASS
ERIE, Pa. - Gannon volleyball
head coach Matt Darling has announced the addition of four players to the
program. The four student-athletes who signed National Letters of Intent
with the volleyball program include Kara Cullen (Marstons Mills, Mass./Barnstable),
Lindsey Deitmen (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor), Alex DelPiombo (Monroe,
Mich./St. Mary’s Catholic Central), and Claren Harris (South Milwaukee,
Wis./South Milwaukee).
The four officially joined the Gannon program in April, joining Courtney
Cook (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel), who signed in November.
As a group, the 2008 recruiting class brings some impressive credentials
to Gannon:
• 7 All-State honors
• 5 state championships
• 12 All-Conference awards
• 1 State Player of the Year
• 1 All-American selection
“It is very exciting for us to announce the addition of Courtney, Kara, Lindsey,
Alex, and Claren to our program,” Darling said. “They are all great players
and great people, and they will contribute to the University with their desire
for excellence on and off the court.”
Cook was a three-time All-District selection and two-time District Player
of the Year at St. Peter Chanel (Ohio) High School. She also received two
mentions on the North Coast League all-conference team. Coached by Jeff George,
Cook was twice selected by the Cleveland Plain Dealer as player of the week.
In addition to her volleyball prowess, Cook is a member of the National Honor
Society and President of the senior class. She will major in Physical Therapy
at Gannon.
Cullen, a middle blocker, enjoyed a stellar career playing for Tom Turco
at Barnstable (Mass.) High School. During her varsity career, Barnstable
collected four state championships and won a state-record 110 consecutive
matches. Cullen was a three-time Cape & Islands All Star, and was twice
tabbed to the Massachusetts all-state team by the Boston Globe. At the end
of her senior year, Cullen was chosen as the Globe’s Massachusetts Player
of the Year, and she was recently named to the PrepVolleyball.com All-America
team. Cullen plays club volleyball for the Massachusetts Patriots, after
having previously played with the Pilgrim Volleyball Club.
Deitmen, a multi-position star whose Mentor (Ohio) High School team earned
a trip to the 2007 Ohio final four, was twice selected to the District II
first team as well as being named the Lake Erie League MVP in 2006. The three-year
varsity starter capped her high school career by earning honorable mention
on the 2007 Ohio All-State team. Deitman was coached at Mentor by Richard
Woodman. She has received numerous academic awards and will major in
Occupational Therapy.
DelPiombo is a setter and four-year starter at St. Mary’s (Mich.) Catholic
Central High School. Coached by Diane Tuller, DelPiombo was a three-time
honoree for All-Huron League, a two-time selection to the All-Region team,
and a three-time All-State recipient. Her St. Mary’s team won the 2006 Michigan
state title, and DelPiombo was honored as one of 10 finalists for the 2007
“Miss Volleyball Award,” given to the top high school volleyball player in
Michigan.
Harris, a two-year captain, helped lead her South Milwaukee (Wis.) High School
team to historic victories in the highly-competitive Southeast Conference.
In addition, she is the team captain for her PCC Heat volleyball club team,
and she was selected to take part in the Badger Region High Performance Camp
in the summer of 2007. Harris also starred for the South Milwaukee basketball
team. Off the court, Harris was named a Wisconsin Senate Scholar and chosen
to represent SMHS at the Badger Girl State.
Darling believes that this class will make big contributions to the Gannon
Volleyball program. “With this class, we get size, experience, athleticism,
leadership, and a tradition of winning. We are looking forward to them being
important parts of this team."
