GANNON SOFTBALL AMONG OTHERS
RECEIVING VOTES IN TOP 25 POLL
ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon
softball team is among others receiving votes for the second consecutive
week in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division
II Top 25 poll released Thursday afternoon.
Alabama-Huntsville (30-5) is the top-ranked team for the third consecutive
week, receiving five of the eight first-place votes and 197 points. Angelo
State (25-5) picked up the final three first-place votes and sits in second
with 193 points. Nebraska-Omaha (16-3), Barry (25-2) and Lock Haven (17-5)
complete the top five.
Francis Marion (27-6), Southeastern Oklahoma (27-4), Grand Valley State (15-6),
Georgia College & State (26-6), and UC San Diego (21-9) round out the
top 10. Gannon was among others receiving votes with one point, 22 out of
the top 25.
Gannon moved to 16-8 overall with a non-conference doubleheader split against
rival Mercyhurst Wednesday at Gannon University Field. Lauren Soldner
(Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) fired a no-hitter during a 7-0 victory
in the opener, but the Lady Knights fell 6-5 in the nightcap.
Three Lady Knights are hitting .300 or better, led by Carol Kienzl (Pittsburgh,
Pa./Baldwin). The sophomore is hitting .385 with three home runs and
16 RBI. Holli Michaels (Tacoma, Wash./Curtis) and Kara Hensley
(Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) are hitting .369 and .333, respectively.
Soldner anchors the pitching staff with a 7-3 record and 1.47 ERA. Both marks
are team-highs. She also leads the team in appearances (13), starts (9),
complete games (7), shutouts (2), innings pitched (66.2), and strikeouts
(57).
Gannon opens Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play
Saturday, March 29 at Ferris State. The doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
