GANNON LANDS THREE ON ACADEMIC
ALL-DISTRICT SOFTBALL TEAMS
ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon
softball team landed three student-athletes on the ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-District II second team released Thursday afternoon. Jaclyn Corroto
(Boardman, Ohio/Boardman), Carol Kienzl (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin),
and Lauren Soldner (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) earned second-team
accolades for their combined effort on the field and in the classroom.
Corroto, who was an Academic All-America third-team selection last season,
was one of four infielders named to the second team. The senior shortstop
owns a 3.77 cumulative grade-point average while majoring in Pre-Med/Biology.
She hit .296 with a .407 slugging percentage and .331 on-base percentage
in 48 starts. Corroto recorded 35 runs, 12 doubles, two home runs, 23 RBI,
and eight stolen bases. She led the GLIAC in runs scored while ranking sixth
in doubles.
The Boardman, Ohio native concluded her collegiate career as one of the best
ever to wear a Gannon uniform. Corroto is Gannon’s all-time leader in hits
(244), runs (158), games played (210), at-bats (693), and doubles (54). She
ranks third all-time at Gannon in stolen bases (47) and fifth in RBI (124).
Kienzl was one of three outfielders named to the second team. The sophomore
leftfielder has a 3.92 cumulative GPA as a criminal justice major. She hit
.333 with five home runs, 28 runs, and 30 RBI in 51 starts while producing
a .475 slugging percentage and .366 on-base percentage. In the field, Kienzl
was close to perfection with only one error in 52 fielding chances.
The Pittsburgh, Pa., native ranked seventh among GLIAC players in hits (54),
seventh in RBI, and ninth in total bases (77). Kienzl hit .367 (33-90) with
runners on base, .317 (20-63) with runners in scoring position, and .328
(20-61) with two outs. She had 13 multiple-hit games, including six performances
with at least three hits. Kienzl also had eight multiple-RBI games while
producing a team-best eight-game hitting streak.
Soldner, who was named to the Academic All-District II third team as a sophomore
in 2006, earned one of the two pitching spots on the second team. The redshirt
junior owns a 3.94 cumulative grade-point average while majoring in Elementary/Special
Education. She was 11-7 with a 2.11 ERA in 23 appearances.
The Sylvania, Ohio native limited opponents to a .243 average while recording
10 complete games and three shutouts. She ranked fifth among GLIAC pitchers
in strikeouts and ninth in opponent batting average.
Soldner ranks third all-time at Gannon in strikeouts (467), fourth in victories
(55), and fourth in innings pitched (515.2).
Gannon’s string of three consecutive NCAA Division II Tournament appearances
came to an end with a 1-2 mark at the GLIAC Tournament. The Lady Knights concluded their
season with a 28-23 record, marking the program’s 19th consecutive winning
season.
The 2008
Academic All-District II softball teams were selected by members of the College
Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The 12 first-team members
will now move to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.
The All-America teams are scheduled to be released Wednesday, May 28.
The District II College Division consists of all NCAA Division II, NCAA Division
III, and NAIA colleges and universities in Delaware, the District of Columbia,
Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. To be nominated for
the Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore
with a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average and a starter or significant reserve
on her team.
