GANNON SOFTBALL SPLITS PAIR OF
GAMES FOR SECOND STRAIGHT DAY

SALEM, Va. - The Gannon softball team split a pair of games Friday for the second consecutive day at the Salem (Va.) Invitational. The Lady Knights opened the day with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory against West Liberty State and dropped a 4-1 decision to 16th-ranked Bloomsburg in the nightcap.

In the opener, Gannon scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to post an amazing 3-2 victory. Chastity Guerrero (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) led off the inning with a single. Jaclyn Corroto (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) followed with an RBI double off the centerfield fence. Casee Piquet (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) came through with a third consecutive hit, singling to put runners on first and third.

Piquet then attempted to steal second and got caught in a rundown. During the rundown, Corroto stole home to tie the score. In the next at-bat, Katie Conner (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) blooped a single into left field. Kristin Schalk (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) then attempted to bunt the runners over, but the West Liberty State pitcher’s throw to first sailed wide and Piquet scored the winning run on the error.

Kara Hensley (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) led the offense with a 2-for-3 night at the plate. Kelsey Brickman (Sylvania, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) earned the victory with her fourth complete game of the season, allowing two runs on seven hits. The sophomore struck out six and walked one.

In the nightcap, Bloomsburg posted two runs in both the second and third innings en route to a 4-1 victory over Gannon. The Huskies scored two runs in the second inning with the help of three wild pitches, including one on a swinging third strike.

Gannon scored its only run in the second inning. Hannah Koenig (Erie, Pa./McDowell) led off the inning with a single. Guerrero followed with a double over the centerfielder’s head on a hit-and-run, scoring Koenig.

Lauren Soldner (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs (two earned) on six hits. She struck out 13 and walked one.

Gannon moved its record to 14-6 with Friday’s split. West Liberty State dropped to 2-6. Bloomsburg improved to 14-2. The Lady Knights conclude play at the Salem Invitational Saturday, March 22 against West Virginia State (3 p.m.) and Glenville State (7 p.m.).
