GANNON SPLITS TWO GAMES DURING
OPENING DAY OF SALEM INVITATIONAL
SALEM, Va. - The Gannon
softball team split a pair of games Thursday evening during the opening day
of the Salem (Va.) Invitational. The Lady Knights opened action with an 11-2
loss to sixth-ranked Lock Haven, before rebounding with a 12-2 five-inning
victory over Shepherd (W.Va.).
In the opener, Lock Haven scored the first 11 runs of the game. The Bald
Eagles scored once in the first, twice in the second, three times in the
sixth, and five times in the seventh. The sixth-ranked team in NCAA Division
II hit a two-run homer in the second and a grand slam in the seventh.
Gannon plated its two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Carol
Kienzl (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) led off the frame with a single. Hannah
Koenig (Erie, Pa./McDowell) followed with another single. Chastity
Guerrero (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) then drove both in with a
double.
Lauren Soldner (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) took the loss,
allowing six runs (five earned) on 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings. The junior struck
out five and walked one. Kelsey Brickman (Sylvania, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy)
allowed five runs in 1 1/3 innings of relief, allowing two hits while striking
out one and walking three.
In the nightcap, Gannon exploded for 10 runs in the top of the fifth inning
and posted a 12-2 five-inning victory. The game was called after five innings
due to the eight-rule rule. The Lady Knights began the scoring with single
runs in the first and second innings. Shepherd scored its only two runs in
the third frame.
Kristin Schalk (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) was the story of
the night. Celebrating her birthday, the redshirt freshman drove in five
runs with a sacrifice fly in the second and a grand slam in the fifth.
Kienzl, Koenig, Holli Michaels (Tacoma, Wash./Curtis), and Jaclyn
Corroto (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) contributed to the offensive onslaught
with two hits each.
Kadie Ondrus (Curtice, Ohio/Clay) picked the victory on the mound,
surrendering two runs on four hits in five innings of work. She struck out
four and walked one.
Gannon moved its record to 13-5 with Thursday’s split. Lock Haven improved
to 16-4 while Shepherd dropped to 2-7. The Lady Knights continue action at
the Salem Invitational Friday, March 21 with games against West Liberty State
(1 p.m.) and 16th-ranked Bloomsburg (3 p.m.).
