GANNON SPLITS THIRD CONSECUTIVE
GLIAC SOFTBALL DOUBLEHEADER

ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon softball team is getting accustomed to splitting Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheaders. The Lady Knights split their third consecutive GLIAC twinbill Wednesday afternoon against rival Mercyhurst at Gannon University Field. The squad posted a 5-0 shutout in game one, but fell 4-3 in the second game.

In the opener, Gannon used a five-run fifth inning and Lauren Soldner’s (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) third shutout of the season to earn a 5-0 victory.

Carrina Crow held Gannon hitless through the first four innings, but ran into trouble in the fifth. The Lady Knights scored five times on six hits and two errors. Jaclyn Corroto (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) and Holli Michaels (Tacoma, Wash./Curtis) opened the scoring with RBI singles. Carol Kienzl (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) followed with a two-run single, before Casee Piquet (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) capped the outburst with an RBI single.

Hannah Koenig (Erie, Pa./McDowell) had two of Gannon’s eight hits. Six different Lady Knights recorded one hit each.

Soldner improved to 10-4 with her ninth complete game and third shutout of the season. The redshirt junior allowed only five hits, struck out four, and walked none.

In the nightcap, Mercyhurst wasted little time jumping on Gannon. The Lakers posted four runs in the first inning and held off a late rally for a 4-3 victory.

Gannon cut the deficit in half on Chastity Guerrero’s (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) RBI double and Kadie Ondrus’ (Curtice, Ohio/Clay) RBI single in the second. Koenig’s two-out double in the third scored Piquet and brought the Lady Knights within 4-3.

With Ondrus holding Mercyhurst in check during the final six innings, Gannon had one last chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning. The Lady Knights put runners on first and second with two outs when a wild pitch on a swinging third strike loaded the bases. However, Brittany Strier earned her fourth save of the season by striking out Gannon’s next batter.

Piquet led the offense in game two with two hits and two runs in three at-bats. Five other Lady Knights contributed one hit each.

Ondrus dropped to 6-6 despite tossing six scoreless innings and recording her seventh complete game. She allowed four runs on six hits, striking out four and walking four.

Gannon moved its record to 21-15 overall and 3-7 in the GLIAC. Mercyhurst is now 15-19 overall and 2-8 in conference play. The Lady Knights return to action Saturday, April 12 against Lake Superior State at Gannon University Field. The GLIAC twinbill is scheduled for 1 p.m.
