GANNON SOFTBALL SPLITS HOME
DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST MERCYHURST

SOLDNER TOSSES NO-HITTER IN OPENING CONTEST

ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon softball team pounded out 12 runs on 19 hits in two games Wednesday afternoon, but could only manage a split in a non-conference doubleheader against rival Mercyhurst. The Lady Knights won the opener 7-0, but fell 6-5 in the nightcap.

In the opener, Gannon won easily behind Lauren Soldner’s (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) no-hitter. The redshirt junior blanked the Lakers through seven innings, striking out four and walking two. In the process, she improved to 7-3.

Gannon scored the only run it would need in the first inning. Jaclyn Corroto (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) led off the game with a double over the rightfielder’s head. Following a sacrifice bunt and walk, Corroto scored on a Kara Hensley’s (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) sacrifice fly to left.

Corroto extended the lead to 4-0 with a three-run homer in the second inning. Casee Piquet (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) then drove in two of the final three runs with a lead-off home run in the fourth and an RBI double in the fifth.

Corroto and Piquet accounted for the majority of Gannon’s offensive damage in game one. Corroto was 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Piquet was 3-for-3 with one run and two RBI. Carol Kienzl (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) added two hits and an RBI in three at-bats.

In the nightcap, Mercyhurst rallied with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to post a come-from-behind 6-5 victory. Trailing 3-0, Gannon rallied first with two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings.

Hannah Koenig’s (Erie, Pa./McDowell) two-run triple in the fourth cut the deficit to 3-2. Kienzl later pushed Gannon in front 4-3 with a two-out, two-run blast down the left field line.

The lead was short lived as Mercyhurst’s Amber Rapose tied the contest at four with a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Gannon regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Koenig led off the inning with a double into the right-center gap. Chastity Guerrero (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) then followed with an RBI single, giving the Lady Knights the lead back at 5-4.

The seesaw affair swung back into Mercyhurst’s favor in the bottom of the inning. The Lakers started the inning with back-to-back bunt singles. After a strikeout and a walk, Rapose and Michelle Schmitz recorded back-to-back bloop singles to give Mercyhurst a 6-5 advantage. Gannon went down in order during the top of the seventh inning.

Kadie Ondrus (Curtice, Ohio/Clay) dropped to 5-2, allowing six runs (five earned) on 12 hits in 5 1/3 innings. The sophomore struck out six and walked one. Kesley Brickman (Sylvania, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) faced two batters in relief, retiring both.

Kienzl led the offensive unit in game two with three hits in four at-bats. She drove in two runs and scored twice. Koenig and Tiffany Joyce (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) added two hits each.

Gannon moved its record to 16-8 with Wednesday’s non-conference split. Mercyhurst is now 11-9. The Lady Knights open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play Saturday, March 29 at Ferris State. The doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
