GANNON SOFTBALL TEAM CONCLUDES
SPRING TRIP WITH TWINBILL SPLIT
LADY KNIGHTS FINISH REBEL GAMES WITH 11-1 RECORD
ORLANDO, Fla. - The
Gannon softball team can declare its season-opening Spring Trip a success.
The Lady Knights concluded their Spring Trip with a 12-4 record, including
an 11-1 mark at the Rebel Games in Orlando, with a split Saturday afternoon.
The squad extended its winning streak to 12 games with a 6-1 victory over
Shippensburg in the opener, but fell 10-1 in five innings to Dowling (N.Y.)
in the nightcap.
In the opener, Gannon erased an early 1-0 deficit with six unanswered runs
during a 6-1 victory against Shippensburg. The Red Raiders took a 1-0 lead
on a second-inning homer, but Gannon tied the contest on Chastity Guerrero’s
(Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) RBI single in the fourth. Carol
Kienzl (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin), who led off the inning with a double,
scored the tying run.
Gannon then exploded with four runs in the fifth. The Lady Knights put two
runners on base with one out after back-to-back errors. Kara Hensley (Waterville,
Ohio/Anthony Wayne) and Casee Piquet (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls)
followed with a pair of RBI singles.
Guerrero and Piquet both finished 2-for-3. Lauren Soldner (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania
Southview) earned the pitching victory, allowing one run on five hits
in seven innings. The redshirt junior struck out five and walked one.
In the nightcap, Dowling (N.Y.) avenged a 6-1 loss to Gannon earlier in the
week with a 10-1 five-inning win. The Golden Lions plated four runs in the
first inning, one in the second, three in the fourth, and two in the fifth.
The Lady Knights scored their only run on an RBI ground-out by Katie Conner
(Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) in the second.
Kelsey Brickman (Sylvania, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) suffered the loss,
surrendering eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings. The
sophomore struck out five and walked two. Kadie Ondrus (Curtice, Ohio/Clay)
allowed two unearned runs in 1 1/3 innings of relief. She gave up two hits
while striking out one.
Gannon concluded its Spring Trip with a 12-4 record. Shippensburg dropped
to 5-3 while Dowling improved to 3-8. The Lady Knights return to action
March 20-22 at the Salem Invitational.
Complete box scores from the entire Spring Trip will be posted on the Gannon
Web site following the Lady Knights’ return to Erie, Pa.
