GANNON REMAINS PERFECT AT REBEL
GAMES; WINS SEVENTH STRAIGHT
ORLANDO, Fla. - The Gannon
softball team used a pair of 2-1 victories Wednesday afternoon to remain
perfect in six contests at the Rebel Games in Orlando, Florida. In the process,
the Lady Knights extended their winning streak to seven games.
In the opener, Gannon scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh
inning during a 2-1 victory against Palm Beach Atlantic (Fla.). The Florida
squad struck first with a run in the top of the first inning. The Lady Knights
responded with the tying run in the bottom of the second.
Gannon then ended the contest with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Holli
Michaels (Tacoma, Wash./Curtis) led off the frame with a double. She
moved to third on a fielding error by the shortstop and scored the decisive
run on Kara Hensley's (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) sacrifice fly.
Michaels led the offensive unit with two hits. Kadie Ondrus (Curtice,
Ohio/Clay) started on the mound, allowing one run on seven hits in 6
2/3 innings. The redshirt sophomore struck out one and walked one. Lauren
Soldner (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) came out of the bullpen with
two outs in the top of the seventh inning. She got a ground out on her first
pitch and picked up the victory.
In the nightcap, Gannon was efficient with four hits and posted a 2-1 victory
over St. Rose (N.Y.). The other Knights opened the scoring with a run in
the bottom of the third inning. Gannon tied the game in the fourth inning
on Chastity Guerrero's (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) bases-loaded
walk.
Gannon then tallied the winning run one inning later in the fifth. Kristin
Schalk (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) led off with a walk. Courtney
Schwenk (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) pinch ran and advanced to second
base on Jaclyn Corroto's (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) single. Michaels
then sacrificed both runners over and Schwenk crossed the plate with the
winning run on a fielding error by the shortstop.
Corroto had two of Gannon's four hits in the second game. Kelsey Brickman
(Sylvania, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) picked up the victory, allowing one
run on three hits. The sophomore walked four and struck out none.
Gannon improved to 7-3 with its seventh consecutive victory. Palm Beach Atlantic
dropped to 12-15 while St. Rose fell to 2-4. The Lady Knights continue play
at the Rebel Games Thursday, March 6 against Wilmington (Del.) (3 p.m.) and
Mary (N.D.) (5 p.m.)
