GANNON SOFTBALL HEATS UP AT THE
PLATE DURING SWEEP AT REBEL GAMES

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Gannon softball team’s bats are starting to heat up. The Lady Knights plated 15 runs while sweeping two games Sunday afternoon at the Rebel Games in Orlando, Fla. The squad opened the day with a 6-1 victory over Dowling (N.Y.) before disposing of West Virginia Wesleyan 9-1 in five innings.

In the opener, Gannon took a 1-0 lead on Chastity Guerrero’s (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) RBI single in the second inning. Guerrero then had another RBI single during a three-run third inning.

Gannon increased its lead to 6-0 with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, before Dowling plated its only run in the bottom of the seventh.

Guerrero, Holli Michaels (Tacoma, Wash/Curtis), Kara Hensley (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne), and Tiffany Joyce (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) all recorded two hits in four at-bats.

Kadie Ondrus (Curtice, Ohio/Clay) evened her record at 1-1 with five shutout innings. The redshirt sophomore allowed two hits while striking out three and walking four. Kelsey Brickman (Sylvania, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) tossed two innings in relief, surrendering one run on two hits. She struck out four and walked none.

In the nightcap, Gannon used two four-run innings to defeat regional foe West Virginia Wesleyan 9-1 in a game that was called in the bottom of the fifth inning due to the eight-run rule.

Gannon scored immediately in the first inning on Hensley’s RBI single. After Wesleyan tied the game in the second, the Lady Knights exploded with four runs in the third. Hannah Koenig’s (Erie, Pa./McDowell) inside-the-park, two-run homer was the key blow.

Gannon ended the contest with four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Hensley capped the victory with a two-run double.

Michaels was perfect in four at-bats during the second game. Hensley was 3-for-3 with four RBI. Joyce, Katie Conner (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore), and Carol Kienzl (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) added two hits each.

Lauren Soldner (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) picked up her first victory of the season with five innings of work. The redshirt junior allowed one run on three hits. She struck out two and walked one.

Gannon evened its record at 3-3 with Sunday’s sweep. Dowling dropped to 0-3 while West Virginia Wesleyan fell to 8-5. The Lady Knights continue play at the Rebel Games Monday, March 3 against Le Moyne at 1 p.m. and regional foe Kentucky Wesleyan at 3 p.m.
