GANNON
OPENS SOFTBALL SEASON
WITH LOSSES AT NOVA SOUTHEASTERN
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The
Gannon softball team’s first action outdoors, whether it was practice or
game action, did not turn out well Thursday evening in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
The Lady Knights opened the 2008 season by beginning their Spring Trip with
two losses at Nova Southeastern (Fla.). The Sharks posted the sweep by scores
of 6-3 and 5-0.
In the opener, wildness on the mound was the deciding factor as Gannon issued
nine walks in six innings. Nova Southeastern broke a 3-3 tie with three runs
in the bottom of the sixth inning without the aid of a hit. The Sharks mounted
the decisive inning with five base on balls, two errors, one wild pitch,
and one passed ball.
Nova Southeastern initially took a 3-0 lead by scoring once in the first
inning and twice in the third inning.
Gannon tied it with three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Jaclyn
Corroto (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) singled home the first run. A second
run also scored on the same play after a throwing error by the Nova catcher.
Corroto crossed the plate with the tying run on Carol Kienzl’s (Pittsburgh,
Pa./Baldwin) two-out, RBI single.
Four different Lady Knights recorded one hit each in the opener. Lauren
Soldner (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) started on the mound, but
received a no decision after allowing three runs (two earned) in four innings.
The redshirt junior struck out three and walked four. Kelsey Brickman
(Sylvania, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) suffered the loss, allowing three
runs (two earned) in two innings of relief work. The sophomore struck out
four and walked five.
In the nightcap, Nova Southeastern’s Lexi Sarradet tossed a four-hitter during
a 5-0 victory. The Sharks tallied one run in the first inning, one in the
fifth inning, and three in the sixth inning.
Gannon’s best scoring chance came in the top of the first inning after Hannah
Koenig (Erie, Pa./McDowell) doubled and moved to third with one out on
a wild pitch. However, back-to-back ground-outs kept the Lady Knights scoreless.
The squad also put runners on first and third with two outs in the third
inning, but another ground-out ended that threat.
Koenig recorded two of Gannon’s four hits in the second game. Kadie Ondrus
(Curtice, Ohio/Clay) took the loss in her first outing, allowing five
runs (three earned) while tossing a complete game. The redshirt sophomore
struck out two and walked three.
Gannon dropped to 0-2 with Thursday’s losses. Nova Southeastern improved
to 11-7. The Lady Knights continue their Spring Trip Friday, February 29
at Palm Beach Atlantic (Fla.). The doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Complete box scores from the entire Spring Trip will be posted on the Gannon
Web site following the Lady Knights’ return to Erie, Pa.
