GANNON SOFTBALL TEAM SPLITS
ANOTHER GLIAC DOUBLHEADER

ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon softball team split a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader for the second consecutive day Sunday afternoon at Gannon University Field. The Lady Knights posted a 6-5 victory over the University of Findlay in game one, but fell by the same score in game two.

In the opener, Kadie Ondrus (Curtice, Ohio/Clay) was a multifaceted weapon. The redshirt sophomore improved to 6-5 on the mound by allowing five runs on eight hits in seven innings. She struck out four and walked three.

Meanwhile, Ondrus was spectacular at the plate. She entered the game with one hit in only four at-bats this season, but went 3-for-3 with two RBI.

Gannon trailed 5-4 when it scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to post the 6-5 victory. Katie Conner (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) was a key factor in both scores. She led off the sixth with a single. Courtney Schwenk (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) pinch ran and scored the tying run on Ondrus’ double to right center.

In the bottom of the seventh, Casee Piquet (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) led off with a triple over the rightfielder’s head. After back-to-back intentional walks, Conner’s single to left field plated Piquet with the winning run.

Ondrus and Carol Kienzl (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) led the offensive attack with three hits each. Conner, Jaclyn Corroto (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman), and Holli Michaels (Tacoma, Wash./Curtis) had two hits apiece.

In the nightcap, Findlay rallied from a 5-2 deficit with three runs in the sixth inning and later earned a 6-5 victory in eight innings. The Oilers scored the tying runs with a bases-loaded single, a passed ball, and a bases-loaded walk.

Findlay’s Jessica Rolston had a ground-rule double to left field with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning. She moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Alyssa Kushinski’s game-winning, two-out single to center field that just eluded a diving Hannah Koenig (Erie, Pa./McDowell).

Kienzl went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI in the second game. Kara Hensley (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) had two hits and one RBI in three at-bats.

Kesley Brickman (Sylvania, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) suffered the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings that spanned two separate appearances. She struck out eight and walked five. Ondrus tossed a scoreless inning of relief, before Brickman re-entered.

Gannon moved its record to 20-14 overall and 2-6 in the GLIAC with Sunday’s split. Findlay moved to 5-18 overall and 3-5 in conference play. The Lady Knights return to action Wednesday, April 9 against rival Mercyhurst at Gannon University Field. The GLIAC doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m.
