GANNON WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM
RANKED 20TH IN USA TODAY ESPN TOP 25
ERIE, Pa. - Preseason
accolades continue to roll in for the Gannon women’s basketball team. The
Lady Knights are ranked 20th in the USA Today ESPN Division II Top
25 Preseason Coaches Poll released Wednesday afternoon. The squad was earlier
selected 15th nationally in the Women’s Division II Bulletin Preseason
Top 25 on October 12.
The University of North Dakota begins its final Division II season as the
No. 1 pick. The Fighting Sioux (32-4) returns three starters from last year’s
Elite Eight squad. The program will be a Division I member in 2008-09.
Southern Connecticut State, Emporia State, West Texas A&M, and Delta
State (Miss.) completed the top five. Washburn (Kan.), Bentley (Mass.), Clayton
State, Drury (Mo.), and the University of California-San Diego rounded out
the top 10.
Gannon is tabbed 20th after capturing its first-ever Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship last season. The Great Lakes Region
looks to be stacked again in 2007-08. Five Great Lakes region teams are listed
among the top 25 and another six teams were among others receiving votes.
Gannon returns eight letterwinners and four players who started at least
13 games from last year’s 25-6 squad. The Lady Knights have qualified for
10 consecutive GLIAC Tournaments, while advancing to four consecutive GLIAC
Final Fours. The program has appeared in three GLIAC title games since joining
the conference in 1995.
Ashley Lowdermilk (Kensington, Ohio/Carrollton) is the squad’s top
returning scorer with 11.6 points per game last season. The senior hit 39
three-pointers.
