THREE LADY KNIGHTS NAMED TO ALL-
GLIAC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAMS

FREEMAN ALSO NAMED TO ALL-DEFENSIVE TEAM

ERIE, Pa. - Three Gannon women’s basketball players have been named to the All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) post-season teams released Thursday night in conjunction with the league’s Final Four banquet hosted by Michigan Tech.

Kristina Freeman (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) and Kim Vargas (Sterling, Va./Broad Run) were named to the All-GLIAC South Division first team while Ashley Lowdermilk (Kensington, Ohio/Carrollton) landed a spot on the All-GLIAC South Division second team. Freeman also earned GLIAC South Division All-Defensive honors.

Freeman and Vargas both excelled during their first seasons as starters. Freeman averaged 15.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.8 steals while starting every game. The sophomore guard shot 50 percent (148-295) from the field, 37.8 percent (48-127) from three-point range, and 75 percent (83-113) from the free throw line. She reached double digits in scoring 22 times, including a career-high 30 points at Findlay on February 16.

The Yonkers, N.Y., native ranked seventh among GLIAC players in scoring, eighth in three-point field goals per game (1.71), ninth in three-point field goal percentage (37.8), 13th in offensive rebounds per game (2.21), 14th in field goal percentage, and 15th in blocked shots per game.

Vargas was Gannon’s leading scorer (16.2) and second-leading rebounder (6.0) before suffering a season-ending injury in the 22nd game of the season. The redshirt sophomore forward shot 53.6 percent (140-261) from the floor, 34.4 percent (22-64) from behind the arc, and 76.1 percent (54-71) from the charity stripe. She ranked 37th nationally in field goal percentage and 76th in scoring. Vargas reached double digits in scoring during 18 of 22 games, including a career-high 32 points at Wayne State. It was the 18th-highest single-game total among NCAA Division II players this season.

The Sterling, Va., native ranked fourth among GLIAC players in scoring, ninth in field goal percentage, 13th in rebounding, 15th in offensive rebounds per game (2.14), and 15th in three-point field goal percentage (34.4).

Lowdermilk concluded her collegiate career third all-time at Gannon with 185 career three-pointers. The senior guard finished 11th all-time with 1,183 career points, falling three points shy of Gannon’s all-time top 10. She hit a team-high 53 three-pointers this season while averaging 10.9 points and 2.9 rebounds.

The Kensington, Ohio native ranked sixth among GLIAC players in three-point field goals per game (1.89) and 27th in scoring. Lowdermilk reached double digits in scoring 16 times, including five of the last six contests. She was named to the All-GLIAC South Division second team and All-Defensive squad as a junior in 2006-07.

Gannon completed its 2007-08 season with a 16-12 record, finishing second in the GLIAC South Division with a 10-7 conference mark. The Lady Knights have posted two consecutive winning seasons and four in the last five campaigns. The program also participated in its 11th consecutive GLIAC Tournament, the second-longest streak in GLIAC history.
