GANNON FALLS TO WSU IN GAME
CRITICAL TO POST-SEASON SEEDING
ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women’s basketball team missed a golden
opportunity this week. With Ashland dropping two games on the road, the Lady
Knights had a chance to overtake the Eagles and move into second place in
the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division,
giving the squad a quarterfinal home game.
Instead, Gannon fell for the second time in three days with a 70-67 loss
to Wayne State Saturday afternoon before 1,185 fans on “Think Pink” day at
the Hammermill Center. It marks the first time the Lady Knights have dropped
back-to-back home games since losing three straight from December 1 through
December 8, 2005.
Gannon, wearing pink uniforms that will later be sold to raise funds for
breast cancer survivors and treatment, came out of the gates on fire. The
Lady Knights took an 11-6 lead after back-to-back three-pointers from Kristina
Freeman (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) and Ashley Lowdermilk (Kensington,
Ohio/Carrollton).
After a Wayne State basket, Gannon produced another 5-0 mini-run for a 16-8
edge with 13:05 left in the first half. Freeman accounted for all five points
with a lay-up and another triple.
The visitors cut the deficit to 16-15, but Gannon responded with another
run. This time, it was a 9-0 blitz that push the Lady Knights into a 25-15
advantage with 7:40 showing on the clock. Four different players scored during
the streak, capped by Katie Kibby’s (Columbiana, Ohio/Crestview Local)
lay-up.
Wayne State made its move late in the half and carried the momentum into
the second period. The Warriors trailed 28-21 with 4:22 remaining until the
intermission, but ended the first half with a 16-5 run and grabbed a 37-33
lead on Jasmine McCall’s three-pointer with three seconds left.
Wayne State kept the pedal to the metal in the second half. The Warriors
opened the final 20 minutes with an 11-5 run to assume a 48-38 lead 4:02
into the period.
The lead ballooned to 68-56 on Chastidy Miller’s three-pointer with 4:21
to play, before Gannon made its final rally. Trailing 70-60, the Lady Knights
scored seven consecutive points. Lowdermilk started the run with a three-pointer,
followed by back-to-back lay-ups from Brittany Tabron (Canton, Ohio/Canton
Central Catholic).
Joy Nash then missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving Gannon one last
chance to tie the game. However, the Lady Knights couldn’t get a decent look
in the final 23 seconds and Lowdermilk’s desperation three-pointer with three
seconds left was off the mark.
Freeman led Gannon with 20 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and four
steals. The sophomore reached the 20-point plateau for the eighth time this
season. Lowdermilk netted 17 markers. Tabron recorded her sixth double-double
of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Gannon shot 41.5 percent (27-65) from the field, 38.5 percent (10-26) from
three-point range, and 37.5 percent (3-8) from the free throw line.
McCall, a transfer from Division I Bowling Green, became the fourth player
to score 30 points against Gannon this season with 30 points and five rebounds.
Monique George added 11 markers.
Wayne State shot 51.8 percent (29-56) from the floor, 41.2 percent (7-17)
from behind the arc, and 55.6 percent (5-9) from the charity stripe.
Gannon dropped to 13-10 overall and 7-7 in the GLIAC. Wayne State improved
to 12-9 overall and 8-6 in conference play. The Warriors moved one-half game
ahead of Ashland for second place in the South Division. The Lady Knights
dropped into fourth place, one-half game behind Ashland.
Gannon returns to action Thursday, February 14 at Ashland. Game time is scheduled
for 5:30 p.m. A complete box score from Saturday’s Gannon-Wayne State women’s
basketball game can be found at http://www.gannon.edu/sports/women/BASKETBA/STATS.HTM/GAME23.HTM.
