GANNON WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM
DROPS THIRD CONSECUTIVE GAME

KIM VARGAS SCORES CAREER-HIGH 32 POINTS IN SETBACK

DETROIT, Mich. - Wayne State scored 28 points off 23 Gannon turnovers and posted a tight 78-76 victory in women’s basketball action Thursday night at the Matthaei Complex.

Gannon was able to offset 11 turnovers in the first 20 minutes with 48-percent (13-27) shooting and went to halftime with a slim 39-37 lead. The first half featured six ties and nine lead changes. The Lady Knights’ largest lead came at 19-15 on Brittany Tabron’s (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) lay-up at the 12:45 mark.

Wayne State led 33-29 when Gannon produced a late rally to grab the two-point halftime lead. The Lady Knights out-scored the Warriors 10-4 over the final 2:56 of the half. Allison Rothlisberger (New Martinsville, W.Va./Magnolia) started the run with back-to-back buckets. Kristina Freeman (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) capped the flurry by nailing a three-pointer with two seconds left.

The home team surged back in front with a 7-0 run early in the second half. The Wayne State lead fluctuated from narrow to large several times. The Warriors had leads of five points, nine points, and eight points --- only to see the Lady Knights rally within striking distance each time.

Monique George’s lay-up with 58 ticks left on the clock pushed the Wayne State lead to 76-68, before Gannon made one last charge. Kim Vargas (Sterling, Va./Broad Run) hit a jumper to cut the lead to 76-70 with 44 seconds left.

Following a Wayne State turnover, Ashley Lowdermilk (Kensington, Ohio/Carrollton) hit a three-pointer with 30 seconds left to bring the Lady Knights within 76-73. Jasime McCall pushed the Warriors’ lead back to five points with 10 seconds left, but Lowdermilk answered again with another three-pointer.

Leading 78-76, Wayne State then gave Gannon one more chance when it threw the inbound pass away with three seconds left. However, the Lady Knights were unable to get a game-tying shot off as the horn sounded.

Vargas led Gannon with a career-high 32 points, going 12-of-14 from the free throw line. The redshirt sophomore became the first Lady Knight to score 30 points in a game since Christina Jackson posted 31 points at Daemen on January 2, 2005. Freeman was the only other Lady Knight in double digits with 14 markers.

Gannon shot 51.1 percent (24-47) from the field, including a red-hot 55-percent (11-20) in the second half. The Lady Knights shot 38.5 percent (5-13) from three-point range and 74.2 percent (23-31) from the free throw line.

Chastidy Miller matched Vargas with a career-high 32 points of her own. Brooke Bowers and McCall added 12 points each.

Wayne State shot 43.2 percent (32-74) from the floor, 19 percent (4-21) from three-point range, and 66.7 percent (10-15) from the charity stripe.

Gannon dropped to 11-7 overall and 5-4 in the GLIAC with its third consecutive loss. Wayne State improved to 8-8 overall and 4-5 in conference play. The Lady Knights complete a four-game road swing Saturday, January 26 at Hillsdale. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
