GANNON ENDS ROAD SWING WITH
DEFENSIVE VICTORY AT TIFFIN

TIFFIN, Ohio - The Gannon women’s basketball team has yet to get on track offensively this season, but it hasn’t stopped the team from winning. The 20th-ranked Lady Knights held their opponent under 50 points for the second consecutive game and ended a season-opening three-game road swing Tuesday evening with a 56-47 victory at Tiffin.

Tiffin, which will join the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) in 2008-09, initially jumped on Gannon early. The Dragons raced out of the gate with an 11-4 run in the first five minutes and 48 seconds.

However, Gannon responded with six consecutive points and grabbed its first lead at 18-15 with 8:49 remaining in the first half on Ashley Lowdermilk’s (Kensington, Ohio/Carrollton) three-pointer. The teams traded baskets the rest of the way as the Lady Knights went to halftime with a 28-25 lead.

The first five minutes of the second half proved to be the difference. Gannon opened the final period with a 10-2 run, opening a 38-27 advantage with 15:19 to play. Allison Rothlisberger (New Martinsville, W.Va./Magnolia) started the run with an old-fashion three-point play. The junior forward then sandwiched another jumper between a Kim Vargas (Sterling, Va./Broad Run) basket and another Lowdermilk triple.

Tiffin cut the deficit to four on two different occasions, the final one coming at 47-43 with 5:58 remaining in regulation. Gannon countered with a bucket from Vargas and back-to-back scores from Brittany Tabron (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) to ice the victory. The Lady Knights held the Dragons to four points in the final five minutes and 58 seconds.

Gannon continues to win despite its offensive struggles. The Lady Knights are averaging 64 points in their first three games. The squad shot 41.8 percent (23-55) from the field, 35.7 percent (5-14) from three-point range, and 45.5 percent (5-11) from the free throw line in Tuesday’s victory.

Lowdermilk led the offensive unit with 18 points. She was 4-of-7 from three-point range. Tabron was the only other Lady Knight in double digits with 14 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. It marked her first career double-double. Tiffany Crocker (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) dished out seven assists while turning the ball over only twice in 32 minutes.

Tiffin shot 35.3 percent (18-51) from the floor, 21.4 percent (3-14) from behind the arc, and 80 percent (8-10) from the charity stripe. Alexis Karel was the only Dragon in double digits, hitting for 10 points off the bench.

Gannon completed its season-opening three-game road swing with a 2-1 record. Tiffin remained winless at 0-3. The Lady Knights have nine days off until returning to action Thursday, November 29 against Northern Michigan at the Hammermill Center. The GLIAC opener is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
