GANNON WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS
IN FINAL NON-CONFERENCE BATTLE

ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women’s basketball team played its first non-conference game in 47 days Tuesday night and the Lady Knights had trouble regaining their non-GLIAC intensity. Gannon shot 32 percent (17-53) from the floor and 24 percent (6-25) from behind the arc as the Lady Knights fell to Tiffin 68-56 at the Hammermill Center.

Gannon led 10-6 eight minutes into the contest when Tiffin started to assume control. The Dragons went on a 12-2 run over the next 5:25 to assume an 18-12 lead on Alexis Karel’s lay-up with 6:40 left in the half.

Kristina Freeman (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) tied the game on her own, scoring six consecutive points. The sophomore hit a pair of free throws at the 5:06 mark to knot the contest at 18. However, the visitors responded with 10 of the last 12 points of the half, including the final six. Kylene Spiegel’s three-pointer with one second left sent the Dragons to the break with a 30-22 edge.

Gannon’s offense could never get out of its funk in the second half. Tiffin opened the final 20 minutes with an 11-4 run, stretching its lead to 41-26 on Leanne Lucius’ jumper with 15:32 to play. The Lady Knights finally cut the deficit to single digits with 47 seconds left to play, but the Dragons hit three free throws in the final 27 seconds to secure a 68-56 victory.

Allison Rothlisberger (New Martinsville, W.Va./Magnolia) scored a career-high 12 points in the loss. Freeman and Abby Bunstine (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Gannon shot 32.1 percent (17-53) from the field, 24 percent (6-25) from three-point range, and 80 percent (16-20) from the free throw line.

Lucius led all scorers with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Spiegel netted 17 points while dishing out seven assists. Megan Fletcher added 10 markers off the bench.

Tiffin shot 46 percent (23-50) from the floor, 26.1 percent (6-23) from behind the arc, and 72.7 percent (16-22) from the charity stripe.

Gannon dropped to 15-11 with its first non-conference home loss since a 67-61 setback to Glenville State on December 8, 2005. Tiffin concluded its season at 12-15 after its first-ever victory against Gannon. The Lady Knights conclude the regular season Saturday, February 23 against local rival Mercyhurst at the Hammermill Center. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Tickets for Saturday’s Gannon-Mercyhurst doubleheader are currently on sale at the Gannon Athletic Offices, located through the 3rd and Peach Streets entrance of the Carneval Athletic Pavilion. Tickets are available 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. through Friday or until the game sells out.
