GANNON ENDS OPENING GLIAC WEEKEND
WITH LOSS TO MICHIGAN TECH

ERIE, Pa. - Michigan Tech ended the first half with a 12-2 run and was never threatened in the second half as the visiting Huskies posted a 76-65 victory over Gannon in women’s basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Hammermill Center. The loss snapped Gannon’s eight-game home winning streak.

Michigan Tech went on a 13-3 run early in the first half to open a 20-11 lead. Gannon battled back within two points on two different occasions. The last time came after Kristina Freeman’s (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) three-pointer with 4:34 remaining in the first half cut the deficit to 31-29. However, the Huskies responded with a 12-2 run to end the half and went to the locker room with a 43-31 lead.

Freeman opened the second half with a three-pointer, but it turned out to be the only time Michigan Tech failed to have a double-digit lead in the second half. The Huskies scored the next eight points and never looked back during an 11-point victory.

Brittany Tabron (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) led Gannon in scoring with 16 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Freeman added 14 points. Kim Vargas (Sterling, Va./Broad Run) and Abby Bunstine (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) recorded 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Gannon shot 33.3 percent (21-63) from the field, 28.6 percent (6-21) from three-point range, and 77.3 percent (17-22) from the free throw line.

Two Huskies posted double-doubles in the victory. Katie Wysocky led all scorers with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Catherine Rottier recorded 13 points and 10 assists. Lisa Staehlin and Katie Zimmerman had 18 and 12 points off the bench.

Michigan Tech shot 52.9 percent (27-51) from the floor, 50 percent (10-20) from behind the arc, and 85.7 percent (12-14) from the charity stripe.

Gannon dropped to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the GLIAC with Saturday’s loss. Michigan Tech improved to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The Lady Knights return to action Monday, December 3 against Daemen at the Hammermill Center. The non-conference game begins at 7 p.m.
