GANNON RETURNS TO WINNING WAYS
WITH 80-54 ROUT OF SAGINAW VALLEY
WRIGHT RECORDS 100TH CAREER COACHING VICTORY AT GANNON
ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women’s basketball team returned home for
the first time in 19 days and presented head coach Cleve Wright with his
milestone 100th career coaching victory Thursday night at the Hammermill
Center. The Lady Knights put five players in double digits in scoring and
rolled to an easy 80-54 victory against Saginaw Valley State, snapping a
four-game losing streak and improving to 7-1 at home.
Wright became the second women’s basketball coach in school history to record
100 career victories. With a 100-65 record during six seasons at the helm,
Wright needs five wins to tie Jodi Kest’s (1996-2002) women’s basketball
school record of 105 career victories.
Gannon initially came out of the gates slow, but turned on the jets midway
through the first half. Kara Kinzer’s three-pointer gave Saginaw Valley State
a 17-13 lead with 12:30 left in the half. The Lady Knights responded with
a 20-4 run over the next 6:33 to assume a 33-21 edge.
Brittany Tabron (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) scored seven
points during the run. The Lady Knights also connected on three triples during
the blitz, including two from Ashley Lowdermilk (Kensington, Ohio/Carrollton).
The difference remained at 12 points (42-30) heading into the break.
Gannon put the game away with a dominating second half. The Lady Knights
opened the final 20 minutes with a 10-0 run. Tiffany Crocker (Dublin,
Ohio/Dublin Coffman) and Lowdermilk sparked the run with back-to-back
three-pointers.
The lead ballooned to 65-34 on Kim Vargas’ (Sterling, Va./Broad Run)
lay-up at the 10:58 mark. Saginaw Valley State was never able to get closer
than 21 points the rest of the way.
Tabron led Gannon with 16 points and 10 rebounds, recording her fifth career
double-double off the bench. Lowdermilk led the starting unit with four three-pointers
and 14 points. Vargas netted 13 markers. Crocker and Kristina Freeman
(Yonkers, N.Y./Pelhem Memorial) added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Gannon shot 44.1 percent (30-68) from the field, 34.5 percent (10-29) from
three-point range, and 83.3 percent (10-12) from the free throw line.
Kinzer led all scorers with 20 points and four three-pointers for Saginaw
Valley State. Brittany Burkhardt and Tricia Everett added 14 and 10 points.
Saginaw Valley State shot 32.7 percent (17-52) from the floor, 27.8 percent
(5-18) from behind the arc, and 88.2 percent (15-17) from the charity stripe.
Gannon improved to 12-8 overall and 6-5 in the GLIAC . Saginaw Valley State
dropped to 8-12 overall and 1-10 in conference play. The Lady Knights continue
their four-game homestand Saturday, February 2 against Northwood at the Hammermill
Center. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
