FREEMAN'S CAREER-HIGH
26 POINTS
LEADS GANNON TO WIN OVER N'WOOD
ERIE, Pa. - Every victory in the month of February will be important
to the Gannon women’s basketball team. In the midst of a four-team battle
in the GLIAC South Division, the Lady Knights control their own destiny in
terms of a GLIAC Quarterfinal home game if they win out.
Gannon got another big victory Saturday afternoon behind Kristina Freeman’s
(Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) career-high 26 points and eight rebounds.
The Lady Knights jumped out to a 45-33 halftime lead and held off Northwood
78-70 at the Hammermill Center.
The first half featured seven ties and six lead changes, but Gannon was
definitely ready to play against one of the GLIAC North Division’s best teams.
The Lady Knights shot 52.8 percent (19-36) from the field in the first half,
out-scoring the Timberwolves 32-14 in the paint.
Freeman’s lay-up with 8:04 left until halftime forged the seventh tie of
the half at 23-23 and was the start of a dominating end to the first 20 minutes.
Leading 32-29, the Lady Knights ended the first half with a 13-3 run. Kim
Vargas (Sterling, Va./Broad Run) started the run with back-to-back lay-ups
and finished with eight of the 13 points.
Northwood trimmed the deficit to 55-47 on Katie Gonta’s jumper at the 10:46
mark of the second half, but Gannon answered with 10 consecutive points to
take a commanding 65-47 lead. Freeman capped the run with a three-pointer
and two free throws. The visiting Timberwolves applied intense defensive pressure
the rest of the way, but was never able to get closer than six points.
Freeman led all scorers with 26 points, hitting 7-of-11 shots and going
9-of-14 from the free throw line. Vargas scored 16 points, followed by Brittany
Tabron’s (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) 12 points and six rebounds
off the bench. Ashley Lowdermilk (Kensington, Ohio/Carrollton) chipped
11 points while Tiffany Crocker (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) was her
usual steady self at point guard with nine points and seven assists.
Gannon shot 44.3 percent (27-61) from the field, 28 percent (7-25) from
three-point range, and 70.8 percent (17-24) from the free throw line.
Sarah Glowacki led Northwood with 19 points, four rebounds, and four assists.
Jodi Ostergren recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Gonta
also netted 14 markers.
Northwood shot 39.3 percent (24-61) from the floor, 31.6 percent (6-19)
from behind the arc, and 76.2 percent (16-21) from the charity stripe.
Gannon improved to 13-8 overall and 7-5 in the GLIAC with its second consecutive
victory. The Lady Knights remain one-half game behind Ashland (7-4) for second
place in the GLIAC South Division and the final quarterfinal home game. The
Eagles defeated Grand Valley State Saturday afternoon. Northwood dropped to
13-7 overall and 8-4 in conference play with the loss.
Gannon continues its four-game homestand Thursday, February 7 against Hillsdale
at the Hammermill Center. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
