GANNON SURVIVES NORTHERN
MICHIGAN RALLY IN GLIAC OPENER
ERIE,
Pa. - The Gannon women’s basketball team held off an unbelievable second-half
rally by visiting Northern Michigan and posted an 80-79 victory Thursday
evening in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opener
at the Hammermill Center.
Gannon scored the first five points of the game and led for the majority
of the first half. The Lady Knights’ largest lead in the first half came
at 17-9 with 13:24 to play until halftime.
Northern Michigan fought back to assume a 27-26 lead with 4:59 showing on
the clock, but Gannon immediately grabbed the lead back on Ashley Lowdermilk’s
(Kensington, Ohio/Carrollton) back-to-back three-pointers. The Lady Knights
eventually ended the half with a 6-0 run for a 40-32 halftime advantage.
Gannon looked to be in complete control after a 14-0 run midway through the
second half. Amanda Blaskowski’s (Cheboygan, Mich./Cheboygan) lay-up
with 11 minutes remaining in regulation gave the Lady Knights a 65-49 lead.
However, Northern Michigan fought back right when the Gannon fans were starting
to prepare for the men’s game. The Wildcats rallied with a 26-9 run and grabbed
their second lead of the evening at 75-74 on Kelsey Deacon’s three-pointer
at the 3:42 mark.
The lead then changed hands five times during the final three minutes and
28 seconds. Kristina Freeman’s (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) steal
and lay-up with 59 seconds remaining proved to be the final difference.
Northern Michigan had one last chance to win the game. The Wildcats in-bounded
the ball along Gannon’s baseline with three seconds left, but their pass
to mid-court was knocked down as the Lady Knights secured an 80-79 victory.
Lowdermilk led Gannon’s offensive unit with 19 points, hitting 5-of-8 three-pointers.
Brittany Tabron (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) recorded a
double-double off the bench with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Kim Vargas
(Sterling, Va./Broad Run) and Freeman added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Gannon shot 40.9 percent (27-66) from the field, 40.9 percent (9-22) from
three-point range, and 94.4 percent (17-18) from the free throw line.
Northern Michigan’s Allison Carroll led all scorers with 25 points, going
11-of-18 from the field. Deacon posted 16 points while hitting four three-pointers.
Northern Michigan shot 51.6 percent (33-64) from the floor, 34.8 percent
(8-23) from behind the arc, and 41.7 percent (5-12) from the charity stripe.
Gannon improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the GLIAC with Thursday’s victory.
Northern Michigan dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The
Lady Knights return to action Saturday, December 1 against Michigan Tech
at the Hammermill Center. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
