GANNON WINS EIGHTH CONSECUTIVE
GAME AGAINST RIVAL MERCYHURST

ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women’s basketball team has made a habit of playing its best basketball in its biggest games. The Lady Knights were no different Saturday night at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.

Sophomores Kristina Freeman (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) and Brittany Tabron (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) combined to post 45 points and 19 rebounds as Gannon earned its eighth consecutive victory against rival Mercyhurst 85-68. Head coach Cleve Wright improved to 9-2 all-time against Mercyhurst as the Lady Knights won their four straight at the MAC.

Mercyhurst definitely came to play, opening a 10-3 lead 3:15 into the game. The Lakers led 18-15 with 11:33 left in the first half when Gannon made its move. Ashley Lowdermilk’s (Kensington, Ohio/Carrollton) lay-up started a 13-3 run that put the Lady Knights up 28-21 with 7:27 showing on the clock. Lowdermilk scored six of the 13 points.

The home team sliced the lead to one with six consecutive points, but Gannon ended the half with a 12-4 run and went to the break with a 40-31 lead. Freeman ignited the blitz with back-to-back three-pointers 38 seconds apart.

Gannon put the game away early in the second half, scoring the first seven points as the lead ballooned to 16 points (47-31) 1:58 into the final period. Another Freeman triple capped run.

Mercyhurst cut the deficit to single digits at 71-62 only to see Kim Vargas (Sterling, Va./Broad Run) answer with a three-pointer. The final 17-point deficit was the largest of the night.

Freeman led Gannon with 23 points and six rebounds. She finished one point shy of her career-high after hitting 7-of-12 shots. Tabron recorded her fourth double-double with a career-high 22 points and 13 rebounds. The center went 7-of-11 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free throw line.

Allison Rothlisberger (New Martinsville, W.Va./Magnolia) completed Gannon’s double-digit scorers with 10 markers and five rebounds.

Gannon shot 49.2 percent (31-63) from the field, including a 55.6-percent (15-27) clip in the second half. The Lady Knights shot 35 percent (7-20) from three-point range and 80 percent (16-20) from the free throw line. The squad owned a 30-6 edge in bench points.

Mercyhurst freshman Amy Achesinski led all scorers with 25 points and eight rebounds, converting 10-of-11 shots. Samantha Loadman and Paris Pugliese added 13 and 10 points, respectively.
