SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Gannon women’s basketball team finally got a monkey off its back during its final year in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The Lady Knights placed five players in double digits and posted their first-ever victory at Lake Superior State Thursday evening by an 86-72 count.

Gannon entered Thursday’s game 0-6 all-time at Lake Superior State, but the Lady Knights played arguably their best all-around game of the season. The home team led only once the entire game at 8-6 with 12:22 left in the first half.

Head coach Cleve Wright’s squad used an 8-2 mini-run to grab a 19-12 lead midway through the first half. The Lady Knights then produced a 9-1 run late in the half to assume their biggest lead of the first half, 36-26 with 1:17 until the break. Kristina Freeman (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) started the run with a three-pointer before Gannon scored four of its next six points from the free throw line. The late run sent the Lady Knights to halftime with a 37-30 advantage.

Gannon opened the second half with 14-5 run in the opening three minutes and 58 seconds. Kim Vargas (Sterling, Va./Broad Run) started the blitz with a jumper and ended it with a three-pointer.

Lake Superior State never got closer than six points the rest of the way. The Lakers clawed within 78-72 at the 1:54 mark, but the Lady Knights put the game to rest with the final eight points.

Vargas led Gannon with a career-high 25 points and nine rebounds, hitting 12-of-20 shots from the field. Freeman recorded 20 points and six rebounds. Abby Bunstine (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) and Brittany Tabron (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) added 11 points each.

Ashley Lowdermilk (Kensington, Ohio/Carrollton) completed the group of double-digit scorers with 10 markers. Tiffany Crocker (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) dished out 11 assists while scoring seven points in 38 minutes at point guard.

Gannon shot 48.3 percent (29-60) from the field, 29.4 percent (5-17) from three-point range, and 74.2 percent (23-31) from the free throw line.

Jaclyn Armstrong led Lake Superior State with 19 points off the bench. Emily Joseph chipped in 14 points. Shalyn Beauchamp and Alyssa VanderWal added 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Lake Superior State shot 41.9 percent (26-62) from the floor, 22.7 percent (5-22) from behind the arc, and 71.4 percent (15-21) from the charity stripe.

Gannon improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the GLIAC with Thursday’s victory. Lake Superior State dropped to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play. The Lady Knights return to action Saturday, December 8 against Edinboro at the Hammermill Center. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
