GANNON LOOKS SHARP IN EXHIBITION
VICTORY OVER 11TH-RANKED IUP
ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women’s
basketball team has received numerous preseason accolades. The Lady Knights
finally got a chance to back those honors up Sunday afternoon and promptly
did so in a 72-54 exhibition victory over Indiana (Pa.) in a battle of nationally-ranked
teams at the Hammermill Center.
Gannon entered the contest ranked 15th in the Women’s Division II Bulletin
Preseason Top 25 and 20th in the USA Today ESPN Division II Preseason
Coaches Poll. IUP was tabbed 11th and 16th, respectively, in those two national
polls.
Gannon wasted little time jumping on the visiting Crimson Hawks, opening
the game with a 17-8 run. Four different Lady Knights scored during the run.
Tiffany Crocker (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) hit two three-pointers
while Ashley Lowdermilk (Kensington, Ohio/Carrollton) had a lay-up
and a triple.
The Lady Knights produced their largest lead of the first half at 36-20 with
3:23 remaining until halftime. Abby Bunstine (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe)
capped a 7-0 run to gain the 16-point advantage with a three-pointer. The
squad eventually went to halftime with a 38-28 lead.
IUP opened the second half with a 5-0 run, but Gannon responded with an 11-1
run over the next 3:29 to take control of the contest. The Lady Knights extended
their lead to 19 points on two occasions before settling for a 72-54 victory.
Gannon showcased a balanced attack, putting four players in double digits
while getting 10 players at least 12 minutes of playing time. The Lady Knights
shot 53.7 percent (29-54) from the floor, including a 56-percent (14-25)
clip in the second half. The squad hit 50 percent (9-18) of its three-point
attempts and 71.4 percent (5-7) of its free throws.
Kim Vargas (Sterling, Va./Broad Run) led the way with 15 points. Lowdermilk
added 14 points. Crocker and Kristina Freeman (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial)
chipped in 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Jahzinga Tracey was the lone Crimson Hawk in double figures, posting 18 points.
IUP shot 30.5 percent (19-59) from the floor, 13.3 percent (2-15) from three-point
range, and 72.7 percent (16-22) from the free throw line.
Gannon opens the 2007-08 regular season Friday, November 16 at the Wheeling
Jesuit Classic. The Lady Knights battle West Liberty State at 6 p.m.
