GANNON WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ENDS
FOUR-GAME ROAD TRIP WINLESS
LADY KNIGHTS DROP INTO THIRD PLACE IN GLIAC SOUTH DIVISION
HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Gannon women’s basketball team is heading
home from a four-game road trip with some head scratching. Katie Cezat recorded
24 points and a school-record 25 rebounds to lead first-place Hillsdale to
a 61-54 victory over Gannon Saturday afternoon at Jesse Philips Arena. The
game draws the Lady Knights’ two-week road trip to a conclusion with an 0-4
mark.
Gannon, the GLIAC South Division preseason favorite, dropped into a tie for
third place in the division after Ashland posted a 67-61 victory at Lake
Superior State. The Lady Knights are tied with Wayne State for third place,
but the Warriors own the tiebreaker because of their head-to-head victory
Thursday night. The top two teams in each division will host GLIAC Quarterfinal
games.
Much like Thursday night at Wayne State, Gannon played a solid first half.
The Lady Knights led at halftime in three of the four games during the road
trip, but suffered defeat each time.
Gannon led 34-33 at halftime against Hillsdale. The Chargers led 19-10 at
the 11:23 mark, before the Lady Knights scored 12 consecutive points to grab
a 22-19 lead on Brittany Tabron’s (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic)
lay-up with 8:30 left in the half. Tiffany Crocker (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin
Coffman) and Julie Kleber (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) sandwiched two
Kim Vargas (Sterling, Va./Broad Run) baskets with a pair of three-pointers
during the run. The Lady Knights eventually bumped their lead to five points
at 34-29, but the Chargers scored the final four points and cut the halftime
deficit to one point.
Hillsdale was in complete control of Gannon’s offense during the second half,
limiting the Lady Knights to a 26.7 percent (8-30) overall shooting performance
and 11.1 percent (1-9) showing from three-point range.
Initially, Gannon assumed control early in the second half. The Lady Knights
opened a 44-37 advantage with 15:55 to play. However, Hillsdale responded
with nine straight points over the next 4:37 to regain the lead at 46-44.
Cezat had six points, three rebounds, and one block during the run.
The difference hovered between two and five points until Hillsdale put the
game away with late free throws. Leading 51-50, Hillsdale was perfect in
10 attempts from the charity stripe in the final 4:29 as the Chargers ended
the game on a 10-4 run.
Vargas was the only Lady Knight in double digits with 22 points, finishing
the week with 54 points in two games. Allison Rothlisberger (New Martinsville,
W.Va./Magnolia) pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds.
Gannon shot 32.8 percent (22-67) from the field, 17.6 percent (3-17) from
three-point range and 77.8 percent (7-9) from the free throw line.
Cezat was the story of the night, leading Hillsdale with 24 points and 25
rebounds. Julie Slot, Claire Aubrey, and Janay Miller added 10 points each.
Hillsdale shot 35.7 percent (20-56) from the floor, 27.3 percent (3-11) from
three-point range, and 75 percent (18-24) from the charity stripe.
Gannon dropped to 11-8 overall and 5-5 in the GLIAC with its fourth consecutive
loss. Hillsdale put a stranglehold on first place in the GLIAC South Division
with the victory, improving to 15-3 overall and 8-2 in conference play. The
Lady Knights finally return home Thursday, January 31 against Saginaw Valley
State. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
