GANNON UNABLE TO DENT ARMOR
OF GLIAC'S BEST DEFENSIVE UNIT
LADY KNIGHTS HELD TO LOWEST POINT TOTAL SINCE 2000
ALLENDALE, Mich. - Grand Valley State scored 23 consecutive points
while holding Gannon without a point for 11 minutes and four seconds in the
second half Saturday afternoon as the home-standing Lakers posted a defensive
60-47 victory in women’s basketball action.
Grand Valley State entered the game as the GLIAC’s best defensive team, allowing
57.2 points per game. The Lakers did nothing to hurt their defensive reputation
against Gannon. The Lady Knights were held to 47 points, the program’s lowest
single-game output since losing 68-47 to Michigan Tech in the NCAA Tournament
on March 9, 2000.
Gannon struggled shooting the ball all afternoon, but still only trailed
26-22 at halftime. The Lady Knights initially fell behind 12-5, but rallied
to grab a three-point advantage on two different occasions. The last lead
came at 22-20 on Kim Vargas’ (Sterling, Va./Broad Run) jumper with
6:28 left in the half. Grand Valley State then scored the final six points
of the half while holding the Lady Knights scoreless for the final 6:28 of
the first stanza.
Vargas brought Gannon within 30-28 with a jumper at the 17:43 mark of the
second half when the wheels came off. Grand Valley State responded with a
23-0 run over the next 11:04, pushing the Lakers to a commanding 53-28 lead.
The Lady Knights missed 14 consecutive shots and turned the ball over four
times during the decisive streak.
Gannon did continue to fight, out-scoring the Lakers 19-7 over the final
6:39. However, it wasn’t enough as GVSU captured the 13-point victory.
Vargas led all scorers with 23 points, two shy of her career-high. Allison
Rothlisberger (New Martinsville, W.Va./Magnolia) pulled down a career-high
11 rebounds.
Gannon shot 27.7 percent (18-65) from the field, 14.3 percent (3-21) from
three-point range, and 80 percent (8-10) from the free throw line.
Kim Wyngaard led Grand Valley State with 17 points, hitting 6-of-9 shots.
Crystal Zick was the other Laker in double digits with 13 markers.
Grand Valley State shot 49 percent (24-49) from the floor, 40 percent (6-15)
from behind the arc, and 60 percent (6-10) from the charity stripe.
Gannon dropped to 11-6 overall and 5-3 in the GLIAC with its second consecutive
loss after five straight victories. Grand Valley State improved to 11-6 overall
and 6-2 in conference play. The Lady Knights return to action Thursday, January
24 at Wayne State. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
