GANNON WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM
PRODUCES COUNTRY'S SIXTH-BEST GPA

KNIGHTS LISTED IN TOP 25 FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE SEASON

ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women’s basketball team continued its tremendous classroom success during the 2006-07 season. The Lady Knights have been named to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Academic Top 25 Honor Roll for the third consecutive season.

Gannon posted its highest finish ever, ranking sixth among all NCAA Division II programs with a 3.494 team grade-point average. The Lady Knights were ranked seventh (3.487) nationally in 2004-05 and 21st (3.343) in 2005-06.

Lake Superior State led Division II with a 3.588 team GPA. The University of Nebraska-Kearney (3.578), Regis (3.562), Michigan Tech (3.553), and Southwest Minnesota State (3.521) completed the top five.

Gannon, Winona State (3.461), Fairmont State (3.459), Lewis (3.452), and Abilene Christian (3.449) rounded out the top 10. Three of the top six teams hail from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). In all, six GLIAC programs were listed in the top 25.

Gannon has traditionally been solid on the court and in the classroom, especially under sixth-year head coach Cleve Wright. Five Lady Knights were named to the GLIAC All-Academic team in 2006-07: Christina Jackson, Katie Kibby, Ashley Lowdermilk, Carrie Nolan, and Kim Vargas. Freshmen and first-year transfers were not eligible for the GLIAC All-Academic team. Overall, Gannon players have earned GLIAC All-Academic honors 24 times during the last five years.

Gannon completed the 2006-07 season with a 25-6 record, equaling the second-highest single-season victory total in school history. Only the 1986-87 team (26-4) posted more victories. The Lady Knights won 10 consecutive games en route to the school’s first-ever GLIAC basketball championship. The win streak was the second-longest all-time at Gannon.

The list of 2006-07 accomplishments was plentiful. Gannon defeated defending NCAA Division II National Champion Grand Valley State twice, including a 66-59 victory against the Lakers in the NCAA Tournament first round. The Lady Knights also posted the program’s best GLIAC record (15-2) and hosted the GLIAC post-season tournament for the first time.

Gannon has qualified for 10 consecutive GLIAC Tournaments. The Lady Knights have participated in four consecutive GLIAC Final Fours and have appeared in three GLIAC title games.
