GANNON ERASES HUGE DEFICIT IN
16-POINT VICTORY AGAINST FINDLAY

ERIE, Pa. - It wasn’t the way a team wants to start a game, but it was definitely the way one wants to end it. The Gannon women’s basketball team fell behind 19-2, but rallied with a big second half en route to a 72-56 victory over the University of Findlay Thursday night at the Hammermill Center.

Findlay came out of the gates looking like world beaters. Kim Vargas (Sterling, Va./Broad Run) scored the game’s opening points with a jumper, but the Oilers then rolled off 19 consecutive points for a 19-2 lead with 13:13 left in the half. The Lady Knights missed six consecutive shots and turned the ball over eight times during the run that lasted six minutes and 40 seconds.

Gannon did not record another field goal until Allison Rothlisberger (New Martinsville, W.Va./Magnolia) drained a jumper from the free throw line at the 12:34 mark. Rothlisberger’s jumper ignited an 11-2 run and brought the Lady Knights within 21-15 with 7:28 until halftime.

Findlay bumped the lead back up to 11 points at 29-18 until Gannon ended the half on an 11-5 run, heading to the intermission with a 34-29 deficit.

Gannon wasted little time taking control in the second half. The Lady Knights opened the frame with a 16-4 run over the first 5:43. Five different players scored during the streak, capped by Vargas’ triple at the 14:17 mark.

A 5-0 run midway through the half pushed Gannon’s lead into double digits and the Oilers were never able to get the deficit into single digits the rest of the way. Rothlisberger’s jumper with 26 seconds remaining gave Gannon its biggest lead of the night with the final 72-56 score.

Ashley Lowdermilk (Kensington, Ohio/Carrollton) led all scorers with 18 points, finishing one shy of her season-high. Kristina Freeman (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) added 15 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Rothlisberger chipped in a career-high 11 points off the bench while Brittany Tabron (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) recorded 10 points and nine rebounds.

Gannon shot 46.2 percent (24-52) from the field, 35.3 percent (6-17) from three-point range, and 85.7 percent (18-21) from the free throw line.

Ashley Westenbarger, Katie Greisiger, and Brittany Wells led Findlay with 10 points each. The Oilers shot 42.1 percent (24-57) from the floor, 20 percent (4-20) from behind the arc, and 66.7 percent (4-6) from the charity stripe.

Gannon improved to 10-4 overall and 4-1 in the GLIAC with its fourth consecutive victory. Findlay dropped to 7-6 overall and 2-4 in conference play. The Lady Knights return to action Saturday, January 12 against Ashland at the Hammermill Center. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
