GANNON WOMEN'S BASKETBALL STARTS
ROAD TRIP WITH 76-61 LOSS AT FERRIS
LADY KNIGHTS END GLIAC STINT 0-6 ALL-TIME IN BIG RAPIDS
BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The Gannon women’s basketball team will not
miss road trips to Ferris State when its stay in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (GLIAC) ends at the conclusion of the 2007-08 season.
The Bulldogs out-scored Gannon 46-29 in the second half and rolled to a 76-61
victory Thursday night at Jim Wink Arena. The loss dropped the Lady Knights
to 0-6 all-time in Big Rapids, Michigan.
Gannon played a solid first half, leading 32-30 at the intermission. Leading
18-17, the Lady Knights went on an 8-0 run to grab its biggest lead of the
night at 26-17. Kim Vargas (Sterling, Va./Broad Run) had four points
during the run, which was capped by Kristina Freeman’s (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham
Memorial) lay-up with 6:36 left in the half.
Gannon still led 30-23 when Ferris State began its rally. The Bulldogs ended
the half with a 7-2 run and cut the halftime deficit to two points.
The two teams played on even terms for the first four minutes of the second
half when Ferris State took control. The Bulldogs extended a two-point lead
to 50-40 after an 8-0 run.
Gannon fought back within 57-53 on Allison Rothlisberger’s (New Martinsville,
W.Va./Magnolia) basket at the 10:56 mark. However, Ashley Fleming started
and ended a 7-0 Ferris State run with a pair of lay-ups, putting the home
team in command 64-53 with seven minutes to play. The final score of 76-61
was the Bulldogs’ largest lead of the evening.
Freeman continued her torrid play with 21 points, hitting 7-of-11 shots.
The sophomore guard has reached the 20-point plateau in four of the last
five games. Vargas recorded 19 points and seven rebounds. Rothlisberger netted
11 markers off the bench.
Gannon shot 34.4 percent (21-61) from the field, 22.2 percent (4-18) from
three-point range, and 83.3 percent (15-18) from the free throw line.
Sam Johns led Ferris State with 15 points off the bench. Rachel Folcik, who
entered the game with an average of 20.6 points per game, was held to 12
points. Jenna Guay and Teghen Thelen added 10 points each.
Ferris State shot 42.4 percent (28-66) from the floor, 33.3 percent (6-18)
from behind the arc, and 87.5 percent (14-16) from the charity stripe.
Gannon saw its season-high five-game win streak snapped and dropped to 11-5
overall. The Lady Knights fell to 5-2 in the GLIAC. Ferris State improved
to 11-5 overall and 6-1 in conference play. Gannon returns to action Saturday,
January 19 at Grand Valley State. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
