GANNON NARROWLY MISSES SCORING
RECORD IN 113-80 ROUT OF DAEMEN

EIGHT LADY KNIGHTS REACH DOUBLE DIGITS IN SCORING

ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women’s basketball team definitely broke out of its early season offensive woes Monday evening with a near record-breaking offensive performance. The Lady Knights put eight players in double figures in scoring and rolled to an easy 113-80 victory against visiting Daemen at the Hammermill Center.

The 113 points fell four shy of the school’s single-game record of 117 set against Hilbert on February 10, 1994. The combined total of 193 points fell one shy of the school record of 194 set during Gannon’s 112-82 victory over West Virginia Tech on November 25, 1997.

The contest was actually a nip-and-tuck affair for the first 13 minutes, which featured eight ties and 13 lead changes. Daemen’s Sarah Bogardus forged the eighth tie of the first half with a jumper at the 7:06 mark, knotting the score at 32.

That’s when Gannon began its decisive run. Abby Bunstine’s (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) three-pointer started a 15-3 run that put the Lady Knights in front 47-35 with 2:23 until halftime. Five different players scored during the run, including two baskets each from Kristina Freeman (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) and Katie Kibby (Columbiana, Ohio/Crestview Local). The home squad eventually went to halftime with a 52-41 advantage.

Gannon kept the pedal to the medal in the second half as the lead ballooned as large as 41 points with four minutes to play. The Lady Knights out-scored the Wildcats 61-39 in the second half en route to the 113-80 victory.

Kim Vargas (Sterling, Va./Broad Run) led Gannon with 18 points and eight rebounds. Freeman and Ashley Lowdermilk (Kensington, Ohio/Carrollton) added 17 and 16 points, respectively.

Tiffany Crocker (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 11 assists. Gannon’s two point guards (Crocker and Bunstine) combined to post 21 points, 17 assists, five rebounds, two steals, and only one turnover.

Gannon shot 52.2 percent (36-69) from the field, 50 percent (14-28) from three-point range, and 87.1 percent (27-31) from the free throw line.

Bogardus, who entered the game with a 27.0 scoring average, netted a game-high 35 points for Daemen. The junior went 13-of-19 from the field. Mary Kate Wilson chipped in 13 points.

Daemen shot 48.2 percent (27-56) from the floor, 21.4 percent (3-14) from behind the arc, and 76.7 percent (23-30) from the charity stripe.

Gannon improved to 4-2 with Monday’s victory. Daemen dropped to 2-4. The Lady Knights return to action Thursday, December 6 at Lake Superior State. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The contest can be heard live on Jet Radio 1400 and via the Internet at http://www.gannon.edu/sports/werg/knightsound.ihtml.
