GANNON OFFENSE REMAINS
UNSTOPPABLE IN ROUT OF EDINBORO

ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women’s basketball team tried to find its offensive identity for the first five games. No need to search any longer because the Lady Knights found it. Gannon continued its recent offensive explosion Saturday night with an easy 89-64 non-conference victory over local rival Edinboro at the Hammermill Center.

Gannon averaged 67.4 points in its first five games, but the Lady Knights have exploded for 96 points per game during the last three. Two days after earning their first-ever victory at Lake Superior State in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the Lady Knights raced out to a 45-30 halftime lead and rolled to a 25-point victory.

Edinboro took a 3-0 lead on Samantha Reimer’s three-pointer eight seconds into the game. However, Gannon erased a 5-2 deficit with an 8-0 run and never trailed again.

Gannon’s largest lead of the first half was its 45-30 halftime lead. The Lady Knights extended their lead to 27 points at 89-64 before Kelcie Hellmer’s jumper with 14 seconds left provided for the final score.

Kim Vargas (Sterling, Va./Broad Run) led Gannon with a career-high 25 points for the second consecutive game. Kristina Freeman (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) and Brittany Tabron (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) added 13 and 12 points, respectively. Abby Bunstine (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) chipped in 10 points off the bench, going 10-of-10 from the free throw line.

Gannon shot 39.7 percent (25-63) from the field, 40 percent (8-20) from three-point range, and 86.1 percent (31-36) from the

Reimer and Rae Sherred reached double digits for Edinboro, scoring 17 and 15 points. Edinboro shot 41.2 percent (21-51) from the floor, 25 percent (5-20) from behind the arc, and 70.8 percent (17-24) from the charity stripe.

Gannon improved to 6-2 overall with Saturday’s victory. Edinboro dropped to 3-3. The Lady Knights will have 10 days off for final exams before returning to action Tuesday, December 18 against Bellarmine (Ky.) at the Cruzin Classic in Miami Shores, Fla. Game time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
