GANNON STUNS ASHLAND 75-74
WITH LATE SECOND-HALF RALLY

ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women’s basketball team performed the magic trick yet again. The Lady Knights shook off a slow start and captured an unbelievable 75-74 victory over Ashland Saturday afternoon with a late rally at the Hammermill Center.

Ashland’s largest lead of the first half came at 30-18 with 6:47 showing on the clock. Abby Bunstine’s (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) three-pointer cut the deficit to 36-32, but the Eagles netted the final three points of the half for a 39-32 edge at the break.

The difference was back to 12 points after Betsy Morrison’s jumper with 13:53 to play. Lynsey Warren’s lay-up at the 10:37 mark gave Ashland a 59-50 lead.

Kim Vargas (Sterling, Va./Broad Run) then hit a jumper and three-pointer to bring Gannon within 59-55. The visitors quickly bumped the lead to 64-55 with five consecutive points of their own.

Gannon followed with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 64-62 on Tiffany Crocker’s (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) three-pointer with 4:38 remaining. The Lady Knights finally pulled even at 68 on Kristina Freeman’s (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) triple at the 3:42 mark.

However, Ashland didn’t fold and regained the lead. The Eagles had a 74-70 lead after Lisa Graue’s jumper with 1:16 to play, setting up the stunning finish.

Ashley Lowdermilk (Kensington, Ohio/Carrollton), who was 0-of-9 at the point, drilled a long three-pointer from the right wing to cut the deficit to 74-73 with 59 ticks left on the clock.

Allison Rothlisberger (New Martinsville, W.Va./Magnolia) was then fouled after grabbing a defensive rebound on Ashland’s next possession. The junior forward calmly knocked down both free throws with 29 seconds left, giving the Lady Knights a 75-74 advantage.

Ashland missed a jumper with 10 seconds left and immediately fouled. Gannon missed the front end of a one-and-one, but the Eagles missed a final three-pointer at the buzzer as the Lady Knights escaped with a one-point victory.

Gannon 47.3 percent (26-55) from the field, including a 57.1-percent (16-28) clip in the second half. The Lady Knights shot 55 percent (11-20) from three-point range and 75 percent (12-16) from the free throw line.

Freeman led Gannon with 24 points, tying a career-high she set in the season opener against West Liberty State. Bunstine recorded a season-high 17 points off the bench, hitting 5-of-8 three-pointers. Vargas chipped in 16 points.

Ashland shot 50.9 percent (29-57) from the floor, 25 percent (3-12) from behind the arc, and 81.3 percent (13-16) from the charity stripe.
