GANNON WRESTLERS FINISH
SECOND AT VIRGINIA DUALS
 
HAMPTON, Va. - The Gannon University wrestling team closed its second and final day at the Virginia Duals with a second-place finish at the 28th-annual event. Gannon’s 41-6 victory over NCAA Division I opponent Wagner College on Friday sent the Golden Knights into the semifinals against SUNY Brockport, ranked 16th nationally among Division III schools, Saturday afternoon. Gannon, who is ranked 13th nationally and third in the East Region in Division II, defeated the Golden Eagles 30-10.
   
Gannon’s Chris Santucci (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) kicked the contest off with a 4-3 decision over 125-pounder Shawn Hainey. Corey Bowers (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) followed with a 13-9 decision over Josh Bellinger at 133. Kevin McElhaney (Jamestown, Pa./Jamestown) got his second major decision at 141 this weekend with a 13-5 win over Ryan Fallot.
   
Redshirt-sophomore Ted Hoag (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) won the 149-pound weight class match-up against James Forsyth by 8-5 decision. Gannon’s Brandon Monin (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) took on Mike Cole and won by a 16-1 technical fall at 157.
   
Brockport’s 165-pounder Shaheim Bradshaw put four points on the board with an 11-3 win by major decision over Tony Petrella (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley). Gannon’s A. J. Sayles (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) answered back at 174 with an 8-5 decision over Eric Van Patten.
   
Erie-native Pino Scavella (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) earned an easy six points for the Golden Knights with a forfeit at 184. Brockport’s Anthony Austin also got a free pass and six points with Gannon’s forfeit of 197.
   
Gannon heavyweight Frank McGrath (Hammonton, N.J./St. Augustine) closed the contest with a 4-0 decision over Jabrill Patterson.
   
Gannon’s semifinal win sent them to the Championship Round against Newberry College. Newberry, ranked 10th nationally and second in the East Region in Division II, swept the Golden Knights 40-0.
   
Gannon (4-1) continues its season at Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday, January 19 at 7 p.m.
