GANNON GRAPPLERS DEFEAT
DIVISION I WAGNER COLLEGE

HAMPTON, Va. - The Gannon University wrestling team closed its first day at the 28th-annual Virginia Duals with a win against NCAA Division I Wagner College (2-8-1). The Golden Knights, ranked 13th nationally and third in the East Region among Division II schools, defeated the Seahawks 41-6 in a near sweep.

Scott Baron (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) won an 11-5 decision over Nicholas Keshecki at 125. Ethan Swope (Luthersburg, Pa./DuBois Area) was the first of four Golden Knights to win by fall. The freshman pinned Joe Eurell in 4:42 at 133. Kevin McElhaney (Jamestown, Pa./Jamestown) faced the Seahawks’ Mike Tutujian in the 141-pound match-up and won by a 22-13 major decision.

It took a mere 51 seconds for Zack McKendree (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area)  to pin 149-pounder Patrick Larkin and improve Gannon’s lead to 19-0. Redshirt junior Brandon Monin (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) followed at 157 and earned an 11-1 major decision over Sean Quinn.

At 165, Freshman Chris Daniels (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) found victory in an 11-7 decision over Larry Peotter. Gannon’s A. J. Sayles (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) won the 174-pound weight class by fall. Sayles pinned Peter Morano in 5:13. Erie-native Pino Scavella (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) took 184 by a 5-0 decision over Ed Broderick.

Wagner College’s Anthony Interiano won 197 by forfeit, giving the Seahawks six points. However, it would be their only win, as Gannon heavyweight Frank McGrath (Hammonton, N.J./St. Augustine) closed the contest with a 5:06 pin of John Graeffe.

The Golden Knights (3-0) continue action at the two-day-long Virginia duals on Saturday, January 12. Gannon is scheduled to face SUNY Brockport, ranked 16th in Division III, in the next round of action.
