GANNON WRESTLERS DEFEAT
SHIPPENSBURG AT HOME
 
ERIE, Pa. - The 12th-ranked Gannon University wrestling team improved its dual record to 6-2 after defeating Shippensburg University 29-13 Saturday evening at the Hammermill Center.
   
Scott Baron (Saegertown, Pa/Saegertown) kicked the event off with an 11-5 decision in Gannon’s favor over Andrew Jones at the 125-pound weight class.
   
Corey Bowers (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) increased Gannon’s lead to 7-0 after earning a 14-3 major decision over 133-pounder Gary Atiyeh.
   
Shippensburg (6-4) narrowed the gap to three after Steve Fittery recorded a 17-8 major decision in the 141-pound bout over Kevin McElhaney (Jamestown, Pa./Jamestown Area). Fittery is ranked second nationally.
   
Zack McKendree (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) increased Gannon’s lead to 11-4 after winning the 149-pound match-up against Rob Cross by a 14-4 major decision.
   
Shippensburg’s Dan Nauman brought the Red Raiders within one after winning 157 by fall over Brandon Monin (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) in 3 minutes, 45 seconds.
   
Up 11-10, Tony Petrella (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) added three points to Gannon’s lead by defeating David Sunderland by a 6-5 decision at 165.
   
However, Shippensburg came within one point again after Chris Barrick won 174 by a 9-6 decision over A.J. Sayles (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon).
   
Pino Scavella (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) earned a tough 4-2 decision over Shippensburg’s Jon Hade at 184.
   
Gannon’s Jacob Tazzi (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) earned an easy six points for the Golden Knights, as he won 197 by forfeit.

Heavyweight Frank McGrath (Hammonton, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) needed 3:30 to pin Shippensburg’s Jon Rhone, giving Gannon six points and the 29-13 victory.
   
Gannon’s last victory over Shippensburg came in the 2002-03 season.
   
The Golden Knights are ranked third in the East Region, while the Red Raiders are ranked sixth.
   
Gannon returns to the mats on Wednesday, February 13 to face Ashland University in away dual action.
