SEEKS THIRD PLACE
AT WRESTLING NATIONALS
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa –
Gannon wrestler Zack McKendree
(Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) can finish as high as third at the
NCAA Division II National Wrestling Tournament, hosted by Upper Iowa
University, after finishing 2-1 Friday evening.
The 149-pound sophomore opened the two-day event with a close loss by
3-0 decision to University of Nebraska-Kearney’s Ryan Etherton, ranked
sixth nationally.
McKendree, who qualified for nationals last year at the 157-pound
weight class, defeated University of Findlay’s Sean Dong by 7-2
decision in the second round.
The Vandergrift, Pa., native then moved on to close out the day’s
second session by taking out Joshua Nolan of San Francisco State
University (SFSU) by 21-4 technical fall at 4 minutes, 54 seconds.
Gannon and SFSU are tied for second with seven points. Minnesota
State-Mankato leads the field of 37 with 66.5 points. Nebraska-Kearney
(57.5), Pitt-Johnstown (51.0), Nebraska-Omaha (49.5), and Western State
(42.0) round out the top five.
McKendree is the only Golden Knight at the national tournament with the
possibility of placing.
Corey Bowers (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake)
went 0-2 at 133. Bowers earned the opportunity to compete at nationals
by winning a true fourth place bout at East Regionals after placing
fifth.
Senior Pino Scavella’s (Erie,
Pa./Harbor Creek) second appearance in as many years at the
national tournament went 1-2 at 184.
Gannon heavyweight Frank McGrath
(Hammonton, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) finished at 0-2.
