GANNON'S SCAVELLA FINISHES NO. 1
AMONG DIVISION II WRESTLERS IN PINS

McELHANEY FINISHES THIRD NATIONALLY

ERIE, Pa. - Gannon had two of the nation’s top three wrestlers this season when it came to ending a match via the pin. Pino Scavella (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) finished No. 1 among NCAA Division II wrestlers with 17 pins. Kevin McElhaney (Jamestown, N.Y./Jamestown Area) placed third nationally with 13.

With wrestling statistics being essentially non-existent in the past, the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) launched a live leaderboard this season on its media Web site InterMat. It started releasing weekly leaders to the national print, online and broadcast media as well as to the college coaches and sports information offices of all NCAA Division I, II and III programs beginning last January.

“We finally have a tool that will enable us to announce and award wrestlers for leading the nation in a specific category, whether it be wins, falls, technical falls or major decisions,” said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. “We feel this is yet another way to enhance the visibility of our sport by offering newsworthy content to the nation’s media outlets.”

Scavella led NCAA Division II with 17 pins, including 12 that came during the first period. The redshirt senior advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championships this season for the second time in his career.

Nebraska-Kearney’s Ryan Etherton finished second with 14 pins while McElhaney placed third with 13.
