GANNON
FINISHES FOURTH
AT EAST REGIONALS
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The
Gannon University wrestling team finished in fourth place at the NCAA
Division II East Regional Wrestling Tournament, hosted by the
University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, Saturday.
Newberry College won the event with 129.5 points. Pitt-Johnstown
followed with 121.0 points. Mercyhurst College finished third with 87.0
points. Gannon and West Liberty State College each tallied 83.5 points,
giving them a tie for fourth place.
Four Golden Knights qualified for the NCAA Division II National
Tournament hosted by Upper Iowa beginning March 14.
Corey Bowers (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake),
seeded third in the 133-pound weight class, finished the tournament in
fifth place; however the junior qualified for nationals after winning
the true fourth place bout.
The top four wrestlers in each weight class earn a spot in the national
tournament. If the fourth-place wrestler has not faced the fifth-place
winner, the two will wrestle in order to determine who will advance to
nationals.
Bowers, who finished with a 4-2 overall record and two pins at
regionals, defeated Belmont Abbey’s Reimark Neidermeier by 6-1 decision
in the true fourth place bout.
Zack McKendree (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski
Area) finished the tournament in third place by defeating West
Liberty State’s Kayne Melko in a 4-3 decision at 149. McKendree, who
qualified for nationals last year, defeated Melko by decision
previously in February. The sophomore went 4-1 at the tournament and
recorded two pins.
Fifth-seed Pino Scavella (Erie,
Pa./Harbor Creek) qualified for nationals for the second time in
as many years after taking fourth place at 184. No true fourth place
bout was necessary. Scavella finished regionals with a 3-2 overall
record and two pins.
Gannon heavyweight Frank McGrath
(Hammonton, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) rounded out national
qualifiers after finishing fourth. No true fourth place bout was
necessary. McGrath pinned one opponent at East Regionals and went 3-2
overall.
Two more Golden Knights placed at the tournament.
Kevin McElhaney (Jamestown,
Pa./Jamestown Area) finished fifth at 141. McElhaney tallied two
pins and recorded a 4-2 overall record.
A. J. Sayles (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle
Vernon) placed sixth at 174. The redshirt-senior went 3-3
overall and earned one pin.
