NATION'S 13TH-HIGHEST TEAM GPA

SIX GOLDEN KNIGHTS EARN ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA HONORS

 
ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon wrestling team continues to uphold its tradition of excellence on and off the mat. The Golden Knights recorded the 13th-highest team grade-point average among NCAA Division II programs in 2007-08, according to the 15th annual All-Academic wrestling selections announced by the Wrestling Coaches Association.
   
In addition, six Golden Knights earned Division II Academic All-America honors. Pino Scavella (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) was named to the first team. Kevin McElhaney (Jamestown, N.Y./Jamestown Area), Zack McKendree (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area), and Brandon Monin (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) landed a spot on the second team. Tony Petrella (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) and Jacob Tazzi (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) earned honorable-mention accolades.
   
Truman State (3.394) won the Academic National Championship for the second consecutive season and fourth time overall. Nebraska-Kearney (3.334), Fort Hays State (3.243), Limestone (3.237), and Central Missouri (3.236) completed the top five. Gannon was tabbed 13th with a 3.174 team grade-point average.
   
The team GPA is calculated by averaging the cumulative grade-point average of 10 wrestlers from each team. Eight of those wrestlers must have competed in their team’s NCAA Division II Qualifying Tournament.
   
Scavella landed a spot on the All-America first team with a 3.31 GPA while majoring in Occupational Therapy. The redshirt senior was a second-team selection last season. In 2007-08, he posted a 30-16 record with 19 pins. Scavella finished fourth at the NCAA Division II East Regionals with a 3-2 mark at 184, advancing to the national championships for the second consecutive season. He finished his collegiate career with a 83-66 record and 34 pins.
   
McElhaney was named to the second team with a 3.53 GPA after earning honorable-mention accolades last season. The mechanical engineering major was 31-13 with 16 pins this season at 141. The redshirt sophomore owns a 39-26 career record with 20 pins in two seasons.
   
McKendree and Monin were also named to the second team, both earning Academic All-America honors for the first time. McKendree has a 3.05 GPA while majoring in Pre-Chiropractic. The sophomore went 24-14 with eight pins at 149 this season, improving his career record to 45-21. He also earned All-America honors on the mat after finishing seventh at the NCAA Division II National Championships.
   
Monin owns a 3.12 GPA as an exercise science major. The redshirt junior was 21-12 with three pins at 157 this season. He has produced a 68-44 record with 14 pins during his collegiate career.
   
Tazzi earned Academic All-America honors for the second time, being selected to the honorable-mention team with a 3.33 GPA as a biology major. The redshirt junior was named to the second team in 2005-06. He was 6-4 with one pin at 197 this season, improving his career record to 39-33.
   
Petrella completed Gannon’s list of academic honorees, landing a spot on the honorable-mention team for the first time. The sophomore owns a 3.02 GPA while majoring in Math. He was 8-9 with one pin at 165 this season and has a 16-19 career record.
   
The 2007-08 Division II All-Academic teams consist of 133 student-athletes from 35 universities and colleges. Forty-one were named to the first team, 37 to the second team, and 55 were named honorable mention.
   
A student-athlete must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, be in at least the second full year at his current school, be a member of the varsity team, demonstrate a degree of skill, and have a minimum of two letters of recommendation (academic advisor and coach) submitted on his behalf to be nominated for the Division II All-Academic teams.
   
On the mat, Gannon finished 26th at the NCAA Division II National Championships for the second consecutive season. It was the Golden Knights’ ninth top-26 finish in the last 10 seasons
