WRESTLERS FINISH
FIFTH AT MIDWEST CLASSIC
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The
Gannon University wrestling team concluded the final day’s action at
the Midwest Classic, hosted by the University of Indianapolis, Saturday
afternoon. The Golden Knights finished fifth out of 21 teams and placed
five wrestlers. Adams State (Colo.) earned first at the event with
142.0 points. Newberry College (107.5), Ashland University (103.5),
Indianapolis (91.0), and Gannon (80.0) rounded out the top five.
Sixth-seed Zack McKendree
(Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) took third place at 149 with an
8-0 major decision over the University of Central Missouri’s Kinzie
McClain. McKendree pinned two opponents at the event and finished with
a 4-2 record.
Fourth-seed Corey Bowers (Pasadena,
Md./Chesapeake) pinned Carson-Newman’s Kent Pierson to earn
fifth-place honors at 133. The junior’s pin was his second at the
Midwest Classic. Bowers finished 4-2 overall.
Erie-native and 184-pounder Pino
Scavella (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) closed the event at 3-2
overall with one pin. Scavella took sixth place in his weight class.
Kevin McElhaney (Jamestown,
Pa./Jamestown Area) and Brandon
Monin (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) took seventh place in their
respective weight classes. McElhaney, who wrestled at 141, finished
with a 4-2 overall record, pinning all four opponents. Monin ended the
event at 4-2 overall among 157-pounders.
The Golden Knights return to action on Friday, January 11 at the
two-day-long Virginia Duals.
