WRESTLERS KICK OFF
NEW YEAR AT MIDWEST CLASSIC
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The
Gannon University wrestling team concluded day one at the Midwest
Classic, hosted by the University of Indianapolis, Friday evening. The
Golden Knights sit third among 21 teams competing at the event. Adams
State College (Colo.) leads the competition with 83.5 points, followed
by Ashland University (69.0) and Gannon (64.5). Action concludes
Saturday, January 5.
Three Golden Knights have the possibility to place first in their
respective weight classes. Fourth-seed Corey
Bowers (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) finished the day with a 3-0
record. The 133-pound junior pinned one opponent and will face
first-seed Shane Perkey of Indianapolis University Saturday.
Sixth-seed Zack McKendree
(Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) concluded Friday with a 2-0
overall record at 149. McKendree pinned his third-round opponent for
the chance to face fourth-seed Joey Deaquero of Adams State.
Pino Scavella (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek)
needed only 35 seconds to pin Keith Smith of Indianapolis in round one.
Scavella took victory in the following two rounds, putting him at 3-0
on the day. The 184-pound redshirt-senior continues action against St.
Cloud State’s Brad Padgett.
Three Gannon wrestlers will hit the mat on day two for the chance to
finish as high as third. Kevin
McElhaney (Jamestown, Pa./Jamestown Area) fought back from a
first-round loss at 141 to close the day at 3-1 with three pins. Brandon Monin (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster)
also suffered a first-round loss but finished the day’s competition at
157 with three consecutive wins. Heavyweight Frank McGrath (Hammonton, N.J./St Augustine
Prep) went 2-1 overall Friday and will face Carson Newman’s Tom
Minwell in the next round.
